EDUCATION FOUNDATION AWARDS GRANTS TO SCHOOL DIVISION

The Prince William County Public Schools Education Foundation is pleased to announce the award of $20,310 in grants during the January cycle to four schools and two school division departments.  

Kerrydale Elementary School received $500 to help start a “Kerrydale Literary Society” program.  Timothy Sodo, ED teacher, and Justin Woodside, guidance counselor, wrote the proposal.  This program will provide an outlet for children to experience writing and reading as it relates to life and the events that surround them.  

Hylton High School was awarded $500 for “Moving Towards a Better Understanding of Prince William’s Past,” an enrichment program that pairs Archaeology students with younger students and their parents to touch the past while expanding knowledge of the community’s fascinating history.  Robin Meyering, social studies teacher, wrote the proposal. 

  Loch Lomond Elementary School received $2,310 to start “The Reading Connection,” a project designed to improve reading achievement, while building a closer partnership between school, home and community.  Marleta London, reading specialist; Esther Slauson, reading resource teacher; and Diane Sunshine, first grade teacher, wrote the proposal.

Woodbridge High School was awarded $3,300 for “Creative Adventures – A Visual Arts Residency,” a unique collaboration between Woodbridge High School and Young Audience of Virginia (YAV), designed to provide authentic experiences for all fine arts students.  Melvin Goodwyn, Administrative Coordinator for the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts, submitted the proposal. 

Woodbridge High School also received a $200 grant for “Side Loading in the Classroom,” a program that will provide art students with exposure to painting techniques and knowledge of specialty brushes through a guest artist.  Cheryl Saggers, art teacher, wrote the proposal.
The Community Relations Department was awarded $7,500 to maintain the “Recognizing Employee Program,” a publication that acknowledges teachers and other employees for outstanding leadership, dedication, accomplishment and service.  Irene Cromer, Supervisor, submitted the grant. 

The Personnel Department received $6,000 in support of the Preferred Candidate’s Program.  This program continues to expand the efforts to recruit and retain quality staff.  Darlene Faltz, Supervisor of Recruitment and Retention, submitted the grant proposal.
