STUDENTS DISPLAY FOREIGN LANGUAGE SKILLS
Prince William County Public Schools held the annual Courcours
Francais/Concurso De Discourso recently at Osbourn Park High School.
This competition offers the school division’s students of French and Spanish
the opportunity to display their spoken language abilities. The goals
of the competition are to give French/Spanish students at any level of
study the chance to increase the appreciation of Francophone/Hispanic literature;
to improve their pronunciation and public speaking skills, to be recognized
for their accomplishments, and to interact with their peers from across
the county.
Students compete in the categories of memorized presentation,
dramatic reading and sight-reading and are judged on interpretation, delivery,
and pronunciation. The Spanish competition is divided into the categories
of native-speaker and non-native speakers. Native speakers are those
with significant experience in the language outside the classroom.
This does not mean that the student must have been born outside the United
States. Non-native speakers are those who have classroom experience
only. This is the fifteenth year of the Concurso de Discurso.
The French competition was added in 2001.
This year’s winners, their category of competition and their schools
