BISHOP SELECTED AS DELEGATE TO TRANSPORTATION CONFERENCE The Virginia Department of Education has selected Edward Bishop, Director of Transportation, to serve as a delegate to the 54th Annual Southeastern State Pupil Transportation Conference (SESPTC) in Hot Springs, Arkansas from July 18 to 21. The SESPTC is the oldest and one of the most prestigious regional conferences on school transportation in the nation. Since its inception in 1951, SESPTC participants have consistently been at the forefront in promoting safe and efficient transportation of school children. The 14 Southeastern States operate approximately one-third of the school buses used in the United States. Bishop will have the opportunity to participate in a number of workshops
including transportation rulemaking and initiatives from the National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration,
and other federal agencies. Other workshop choices include reports
from national student transportation associations; new school bus technologies
and designs; rules and methods for transporting students with disabilities;
preventing and responding to student transportation security incidents;
Head Start and pre-kindergarten transportation; and school bus and student
tracking using the global positioning system.
