FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE N.R. #309, 6/18/03 Date: June 18, 2003
BRENTSVILLE DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL EARNS THIRD WACHOVIA CUP Brentsville District High School has won its third consecutive Wachovia Cup, awarded for year-long excellence in Virginia High School League athletic activities. Brentsville, which was awarded the cup in Group A, will move to Group AA next year. The League’s most coveted recognition, the cups have been presented for 14 years, first by Central Fidelity, and now by Wachovia Bank. The award recognizes the VHSL schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic activities program. The winner of the Wachovia Cup is determined by a point system based on performance in state championship events. Brentsville finished among the top five in eight sports and scored the most total points ever in Group A, winning state championships in boys cross country, wrestling, and girls soccer; and finishing second in girl track; third in girls cross country, cheer, and boys track; and fifth in golf. “Winning a state championship in a single sport is a remarkable
achievement; it is the exceptional school that dominates VHSL competition
in multiple sports throughout the year,” said Ken Tilly, VHSL executive
director. The Wachovia Cup will be presented formally at the University
of Virginia’s VHSL Day football game against Duke on August 30. The
Prince William County School Board will recognize Brentsville and its Activities
Director Bill Cameron at its June 25 meeting.
