STUDENTS MEET THE MATHEMATICS CHALLENGE Prince William County Schools recently held its third annual Mathematics Challenge 24 Tournament. The countywide event was held at Godwin Middle School on Saturday, June 7, 2003. Students from grades 3 through 8 participated in grade level competitions at their individual schools to represent their school at the tournament. The following students are the County Tournament winners. Grade 3: Alec Remaly, Westridge, first place; Elizabeth Steele, Westridge, second place; Keith Frantz, King, third place; Zachary Riggs, Kerrydale, fourth place. Grade 4: Fatima Ali, Springwoods, first place; Zachery Updegraff, Springwoods, second place; Michael Asselanis, Marshall, third place; Angela Ruf, Kerrydale, fourth place. Grade 5: Kathleen Fleming, Springwoods, first place; Mary White, King, second place; Colton Tooker, Springwoods, third place; Nicholas Surkamp, Marshall, fourth place. Grade 6: Michael Malakoff, Beville, first place; Andrea Madu, Godwin, second place; Evan Arnett, Beville, third place; Amanda Kalin, Godwin, fourth place. Grade 7: Steven Novinger, Rippon, first place; Erika Maxberg, Godwin, second place; Bryant Zurita, Marsteller, third place; Maurice Turner, Godwin, fourth place. Grade 8: Alan Fu, Lake Ridge, first place; Markuette Goodwin, Rippon, second place; Scott Russell, Lake Ridge, third place; Jake Marcy, Marsteller, fourth place. The Prince William County Public Schools Mathematics Challenge 24 program
uses the innovative 24 game to make mathematics more appealing, accessible,
and, most of all, fun. Students not only practice basic mathematics
facts in the areas of whole numbers, fractions, decimals, exponents, and
algebra, they become adept at mental math, communicating mathematically,
validating their thinking, and recognizing multiple ways to solve problems.
