COUNTY SCHOOL’S ART PROGRAM WINS FIRST PLACE IN VIRGINIA

Prince William County Public Schools won First Place for the State of Virginia and First Place for the Northern Virginia Region from the Virginia Art Education Association (VAEA) for the Youth Art Month Scrapbook which compiled highlight and endorsement pages submitted by all Prince William County art teachers.

Karen J. White, art teacher at Bristow Run Elementary School, created the scrapbook which features a peek into every art teacher's program in Prince William County Schools along with special events each school held during Youth Art Month in March 2004. “This 100% participation by all art teachers made a remarkable showing in the scrapbook and placed the Art Program in Prince William County Schools at the forefront in the state,” said White.
Art teacher Sharon Merriman from King Elementary School assisted with the project by co-writing the report required for competition. Art teachers Liz Lake from Enterprise Elementary School and Mary Vaughn from Neabsco Elementary School assisted during the planning and data collection phases of the project. The announcement came Saturday, November 6, 2004, at the VAEA Fall Conference held November 4th to the 6th at the Hyatt in Fair Lakes.

White also served as the Youth Art Month coordinator and chairperson last year. “It is a great opportunity to educate and gather support for the importance of the arts in education,” said White. Fred Milbert is the Supervisor for Art, Music, Health, Physical Education, Drivers Education, Athletics, and JROTC.
