2001-2002 School of Excellence

Kay Hermeling, Principal
7405 Hoadly Road, Manassas 20112, 703.791.3141

Coles Elementary School received the School of Excellence Award for the first time this year at a celebration for school staff.

Ms. Kay Hermeling, the new principal of Coles Elementary School, accepted awards from Dr. Edward L. Kelly and Mrs. Lucy Beauchamp.

Mr. Wayne Mallard, Associate Superintendent, (left) and Dr. Kelly spoke at the ceremony.

Ms. Candace Rotruck (above) was previously principal in 2001-2002.

During the celebration at Coles, each staff member was presented a certificate and a commemorative gift.

Ms. Rotruck and Ms. Hermeling accepted a School of Excellence commemorative flag on behalf of Coles Elementary at a school board awards ceremony.

Some of the reasons Coles Elementary was selected as a School of Excellence are:

  • At Coles, staff and teachers work hard, focus on curriculum, and conduct weekly reviews with students in a game format they call “Colesmania."
  • CMS tests are used as teaching tools and classroom testing data is shared by teachers to enable student remediation and recovery.
  • Communication with parents occurs on a weekly and quarterly basis and there is a very supportive PTA and parent community.
