Henderson Elementary School received the School of Excellence Award for the third year at the school's awards celebration.
Julie Hurst, Principal of Henderson Elementary School and Bonnie Smuzynski-Penland, Assistant Principal, accepted awards on behalf of the school presented by Dr. William Birchette, Associate Superintendent.
All school employees were presented a certificate and gift by Ms. Hurst and Dr. Birchette.
Maureen Caddigan, Dumfries District Supervisor and former school board chairman spoke at the ceremonies.

Ms. Smuzynski-Penland accepted a School of Excellence commemorative flag on behalf of Henderson Elementary at a school board awards ceremony.
Some of the reasons Henderson Elementary was selected as a School of Excellence are:
- Henderson Elementary initiated a reading program that includes the best of whole language and phonetic instructional techniques to create a balanced literacy program.
- Staff developed a math program using a wide variety of teaching strategies and techniques to meet the individual needs of students.
- The school instituted an after-school tutorial/remediation and enrichment program to help prepare students for SOL testing.
- Henderson Elementary has a supportive community of parents, classroom teachers, staff, and high school students for tutoring and other programs to help students.
