Pennington Traditional School received the School of Excellence Award for the first time this year at a celebration for school staff.
Ms. Joyce Boyd, Principal of Pennington, accepted awards from Mrs. Lucy Beauchamp.
Mr. Stephen R. Wassenberg, School Board Member, spoke at the ceremony.
Staff members were congratulated by Dr. Edward L. Kelly, Mr. Wassenberg, and Associate Superintendents, Ms. Pam Gauch, Mr. Wayne Mallard and Dr. William Birchette.
Ms. Boyd accepted a School of Excellence commemorative flag on behalf of Pennington at a school board awards ceremony.
Some of the reasons Pennington School was selected as a School of Excellence are:
- At Pennington, there is an emphasis on phonics, drill, practice, and flexible grouping to achieve on or above grade-level reading and math skills.
- Students are provided tutorial classes in math, reading, and test-taking, and participate in Friday afternoon Jeopardy competitions for Social Studies review.
- Strong parental involvement is encouraged, and includes parent workshops and SOL nights.
