TEACHING OPPORTUNITIES

BASIC PHILOSOPHY

Our basic goal is to help adults acquire literacy skills and to promote lifelong learning in our learners.  To accomplish these goals, we work closely with the learner in establishing successful learning experiences, promoting positive self-image and self-confidence, and improving competency in literacy skills by setting and obtaining learning goals.

QUALIFICATIONS

Instructors must be knowledgeable in the areas of the instructional process, curriculum development and adult educational strategies.  Must possess personal characteristics necessary to work effectively with adult students, co-workers and supervisors, and community representatives.

VIRGINIA STATE REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS

Instructors should hold a valid Virginia teaching certificate.

BASIC FUNCTIONS

 

  • Offer quality, individualized instruction to students.
  • Use instructional materials, equipment, and aids as supplied by the Adult Education Department of the Prince William County School System and maintain an accurate inventory.
  • Provide pre-testing and post-testing at intervals to determine student achievement.
  • Provide security and confidentiality of all test materials and student records.
  • Prepare and submit all required monthly and annual reports.
  • Attend staff meetings as scheduled by the coordinator.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records which may be reviewed by the coordinator to determine if class will be continued.
  • Arrange for an approved substitute teacher if unable to meet class schedule.  Classes will only be canceled due to inclement weather and/or if Prince William County Schools are closed.  Any other cancellation of classes must be approved by the coordinator.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with students and local school officials.
  • Acknowledge temporary status of position as an adult education instructor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the coordinator and/or supervisor.
