Standard 4.6 ~ Weather
The student will investigate and understand how weather conditions and phenomena occur and can be predicted.  Key concepts include:

• weather measurements and meteorological tools

air pressure - barometer
wind speed - anemometer
rainfall - rain gauge
temperature - thermometer
  • weather phenomena ~ fronts, clouds and storms
How do meteorologists gather data?
Meteorologists gather data by using a variety of instruments.
They use data to predict weather patterns.

Barometer - measures air pressure

air pressure - is due to the weight of the air and is determined by several factors including the temperature of the air

Rain Gauge - measure precipitation

Thermometer - measures the temperature of the air

temperature - the measure of the amount of heat energy in the atmosphere

What are the factors that determine weather conditions?
Temperature
(how hot or cold)

Wind
(moving air)

Types of Clouds
in the Sky

Precipitation
(the form of water that falls from the clouds, such as rain, sleet, snow and hail)
What is a front?
front - the boundary between air masses of different temperature and humidity

What types of weather are associated with high and low pressure masses?
Be able to illustrate and label high and low pressure air masses
and warm fronts and cold fronts.

What are the different types of clouds?
Cumulus clouds -  picture
  • fluffy and white with flat bottoms
  • usually indicate fair weather
  • when they get larger and darker on the bottom, they produce thunderstorms
Stratus clouds - picture
  • smooth, gray clouds that cover the whole sky
    (they block our direct sunlight)
  • light rain and drizzle are usually associated with these
Cirrus clouds - picture
  • feathery clouds
  • associated with fair weather
  • often indicate that rain or snow will fall within several hours
Cumulo-nimbus clouds -
  • can cause lightning, thunder, hail, strong rains, strong winds, and tornadoes

What kinds of storms are created by extreme atmospheric conditions?

Thunderstorm

brief, intense storms that affect a small area

Hurricanes

huge, rotating storms formed over the ocean that produce strong winds, heavy rain, and large, powerful waves

Tornadoes

whirling, violent windstorms accompanied by a funnel cloud that travels a narrow path over land
