Ancient China

Geographic Location

China is located on the continent of Asia.

Written Language

Chinese letters are called characters.  They do not stand for sounds like our letters.  Instead they stand for meanings.

Inventions

  The ancient Chinese made contributions that still affect us today. 
Five of these inventions were:

Kite

Kites were used as tools and toys.  
Some Chinese flew them to scare their enemies.   They were one of the first flying objects invented.
The first Chinese kites were made out of silk and bamboo. They were made in the shape of fish, birds or butterflies.

Silk Cloth

"Once the cloth had been weaved, embroidery was used to give the cloth its delicate, often brilliant patterns"

The Chinese discovered how to make silk from the cocoon of the silkworm.

Silk thread was woven into cloth that was used to trade with other countries.

Compass

The Chinese discovered magnetism and made compasses by floating magnets in bowls of water.  
They were used for navigation and to check that a new building faced in a direction that would bring good luck.

Bronze

The Chinese use rare and precious bronze to make vessels, musical instruments and weapons.

Fireworks

Chinese inventers discovered a formula to make gunpowder.   First they used it to make fireworks at festivals and later it was used as a weapon.

Architecture

The Great Wall of China is located along the northern border of China.  It was built in small sections and then connected into one 4,000 mile long wall.
