Guidance
Communication
Communication is very
important and is encouraged between parents and staff.
Communication may be in the form of notes, telephone calls, report
cards, interims and face-to-face conferences. Generally, the staff
is able to respond to notes and telephone calls the same day; however,
if it interferes with instruction, we will respond within a 24-hour
period.
Absentee
Policy
When your child is going to be out, please call the school at
703-361-8261. A note is required when your child returns to
school. Assignments will be given once the student returns to
school.
Early/Late
Arrivals
If your child is late arriving to school, please accompany him/her into
the office and sign in the book on the counter. Parents are
required to fill out a Tardy Slip, which will admit your child to
class.
If your child is dismissed early,
please send a note with your child in the morning; come into the office
and wait for him/her to be dismissed to the office. PLEASE DO NOT
GO DIRECTLY TO THE CLASSROOM. Your child's safety is our utmost
concern..
Traffic
Pattern
In order to ensure a smooth and safe flow of traffic around the school,
the following guidelines will be observed:
-
Only buses will be allowed in
the bus/fire lane
-
Parking will be permitted only
in designated areas
-
A "kiss & ride"
lane will be available to drop off students in the morning only- at no time will
a car be left unattended in this lane.
-
Parking is provided in front
of the school and to the left of the school.
-
Students will enter the
building only through the front entrance in order to control
students around traffic
Telephone
Tree
A telephone tree is used to notify parents of important events on short
notice, e.g., early dismissal of school due to inclement weather, power
failure, etc. Please keep the school notified of phone numbers at
home, work, or day care providers. Parents should have a plan of
action for their children to follow in the event school unexpectedly
closes early. Please contact the school when phone numbers change at home.
Visitors
Parents are welcome and
encouraged to visit their child’s classroom.
We ask that parents call ahead
and make arrangements with the teacher and administrator so they are
aware of when the visitation will occur. It is also required that the
visitation be limited to no more than once a month for 30 minutes. The
visitor will act as an "observer" only. Visitors should check
in the office when entering the building and are not to go to the
classroom unannounced. All visitors need to leave a photo ID in the
office, should sign-in in the Visitor Log, and pick up a Visitor badge
that is to be worn at all times while in school. Should a parent want to
use one of their "once a month" visitations as an unannounced
visit, they should sign in at the office and an administrator will make
the determination if the visit is at an appropriate time and they will
escort the visitor to the classroom. Again, we expect no more than a 30
minute visitation. Parents who bring lunches, snacks, books, homework,
shoes, etc. should leave them in the office and the children will be
notified to come to the office to pick up these items. Students are not
permitted to bring friends to attend all day school.
Volunteers
Your help is always appreciated; however, children are not permitted to
be with volunteers when working with copiers, paper cutters, etc., for
safety reasons.
Medications
EVERY EFFORT SHOULD BE MADE BY THE PARENT FOR THE STUDENT TO RECEIVE
NEEDED MEDICATION OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL DAY. NO CHILD IS ALLOWED
TO TRANSPORT ANY MEDICINE TO SCHOOL!
The policy for this includes aspirin, Tylenol, cough medicine or
prescription drugs. If your child requires medication at school, an
adult needs to bring it to the office in the original container and
complete a Medical Authorization Form before medication will be
administered.
Breakfast
Breakfast is served from 9:00 am - 9:20 am; the price is $1.20. If your child
plans to have breakfast at school, he/she should go directly to the
cafeteria from the bus.
DO NOT GO TO THE CLASSROOM FIRST!
Lunch
Hot lunches are served everyday; the price is $2.10. Twenty-day
lunch tickets are also available for $42.00. If your child plans
to bring money daily, please put the money in an envelope with the
child's first and last name and teacher's name on it. Each child
is allowed to charge three lunches and if the charges are not paid, they
go to the counselor's office for a sack lunch and the guidance counselor
will call the parents.
Milk is available for $0.60. Checks should be made out to Prince
William County School Food Services or PWCSFS.
Discipline
In an effort to increase the instructional time we spend with our
students, Bennett operates under a ProActive Discipline Plan. We
are fortunate that our students are well behaved and that their parents
are very supportive of our efforts. Generally, teachers handle
discipline in their classrooms. At times, students are referred to
the administration for further actions. A copy of the ProActive
Discipline Plan is given to all students so they and their parents may
review it. Our intent is to make Bennett School a bully-free,
harassment-free zone and to reduce the time spent on discipline so
more time will be available for instruction. A Discipline Appeals
Committee has been established to consider parental or student appeals
regarding disciplinary actions. The committee consists of staff
members.

Guidance
The School Counseling program is a continuous and cumulative process that has
been developed to foster student potential, enhance student achievement
and prevent personal difficulties. School counselors assist teachers,
conduct classroom guidance lessons, work with parents and help students achieve more in school.
The Prince William County Public
School Division does not discriminate in employment or in its
educational programs and activities against qualified individuals with
disabilities, nor on the basis of age, gender, race, color, religion, or
national origin.
