Computer Rules and Parts

We met in the library where we heard the story The Rules by Marty Kelley.

* We discussed the rules for using the computer.
* We reviewed the rules on a worksheet.
* Each student  practiced using a keyboard.

Basic Operations and Concepts
C/T K-2.1        The student will demonstrate knowledge of the nature and
                         operation of technology
systems

Identify the computer as a machine that helps people at school,

                         work, and play.

Social and Ethical Issues
C/T K-2.3        The student will practice responsible use of technology systems,
                        information, and software.

Know the school’s rules for using computers.

Count to 10 with Kidspiration

We used a template called "Count to 10" to practice making sets as well as using the mouse.

When finished, the students had a chance to explore Kidspiration

Math
Number and Number Sense
1.1             The student will count objects in a given set containing between 1 and 100 objects and write the corresponding numeral.
1.4             The student will recognize and write numerals 0 through 100.

Past and Present

Students used Kidspiration to review how people lived long ago compared to how people live today.

SOL Social Studies
History

The student will interpret information presented in picture time lines to show sequence of events and will distinguish between past and present.

Winter Holidays

Did you know that many people around the world do not celebrate Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years as we do in the United States?

There are several other winter holidays and festivals that are celebrated around the world.

Some of the holidays are religious, some are connected to the New Year or beginning of Winter, and others are based more on past events or traditions handed down from generation to generation.

Winter Holidays

After learning about the various holidays, students created a Kidspiration chart and wrote a sentence about them.

Weather

We were introduced to Sam the Owl who helped us review weather through a PowerPoint presentation.  We then clicked on the links below to find out more about weather.

Eye on the Sky              Different Clothes

Earth Patterns, Cycles, and Change
SOL 1.7
The student will investigate and understand the relationship of seasonal change and weather to the activities and life processes of plants and animals. Key concepts include how temperature, light, and precipitation bring about changes in
            plants (growth, budding, falling leaves, and wilting);
animals (behaviors, hibernation, migration, body covering,
            and habitat); and
             people (dress, recreation, and work).

Shapes and Patterns

Using a software from Math Investigations, QS_Shapes, the students explored with shapes, created their own design, solved puzzles by filling in a pattern with shapes, and created a quilt block.

SOL Math
Geometry
1.15        The student will describe the proximity of objects in space (near, far, close by, below, above, up, down, beside, and next to).

Welcome to America WebQuest

The students did the Welcome to America WebQuest to learn more about United States Patriotic symbols.  While doing the WebQuest, we worked on making a Scrapbook of  America.

Civics SOL 1.11
The student will recognize the symbols and traditional practices that honor and foster patriotism in the United States by:
a) identifying the American flag, bald eagle, Washington Monument, and Statue of Liberty;
b) demonstrating respect for the American flag by learning the Pledge of Allegiance.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

The 3 R's are important but can also be a little confusing.  We watched a  video from UnitedStreaming titled "Taking Care of Our Earth". We discussed the meaning of Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling.  We then saw another video titled "Learning About Natural Resources."

Finally, the students completed the Kidspiration activity and also commented how many of the things that we recycle can also be reused.  They are ready to help save our Natural Resources!

Science 1.8 ~ Recycling, reusing, and reducing consumption of natural resources.
