My Computer Dictionary 

Before going to the lab, we started the year in the library where we heard the story The Rules by Marty Kelley.  We talked about the rules we will have when we are in the computer lab.  Next we worked on  making a Computer Picture Dictionary.  Students drew a picture of themselves on the monitor page and they traced their hands on the mouse page.  We also talked about  keyboards, printers, floppy disks and CD-ROMs. 

Basic Operations and Concepts
C/T K-2.1        The student will demonstrate knowledge of the nature and operation of technology systems
                        
Identify the computer as a machine that helps people at school, work, and play. 

Social and Ethical Issues
C/T K-2.3        The student will practice responsible use of technology systems, information, and software.
                       
Know the school’s rules for using computers.

        

Virtual Fire Safety

The students went on a virtual field trip to learn about fire safety. We sang songs and did a chant to reinforce what we learned.                                    

Oral Language
K.3     The student will build oral communication skills.
a)     Begin to follow implicit rules for conversation, including taking turns and staying on topic.
b)     Express ideas and needs in complete sentences.
c)      Begin to use voice level, phrasing, and intonation appropriate for language situation.
d)     Listen and speak in informal conversations with peers and adults.
e)     Begin to initiate conversations.
f)       Participate in discussions about books and specific topics.
History and Social Studies
K.6        The student will match simple descriptions of work that people do with the names of those jobs.

        

Rhyme Time with Kidspiration

The students used Kidspiration to practice their rhyming skills by finding things that rhyme with dog and cat.

Oral Language  
K.4       The student will hear, say, and manipulate phonemes (small units of sound) of spoken language.
                  
a)      Identify orally words that rhyme.

        

Beginning Letter Sounds with Kidspiration

The students used Kidspiration to find pictures that began with each letter of the alphabet

a)      Identify and name the uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

ABC's with Sesame Street WebQuest

This WebQuest is designed to assist in the recognition of letters and what objects start with which letters. This WebQuest also assists students in matching the lower case of a letter to it's upper case.

President's Day

The students helped create a circle map with all the information that they knew about George Washington an Abraham Lincoln.  

They then used a template from Kidspiration 2 to reinforce their knowledge.

History/Social Studies
History
K.1         The student will recognize that history describes events and people of other times and places by
a)      identifying examples of past events in legends, stories, and historical accounts of Pocahontas, George Washington, Betsy Ross, and Abraham Lincoln;
b)     
identifying the people and events honored by the holidays of Thanksgiving Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, and Independence Day (Fourth of July).

 

Exploring Shapes 

Using a software from Math Investigations, MS_Shapes, the students explored with shapes and created their own design.

K.11        The student will identify, describe, and draw two-dimensional (plane) geometric figures (circle, triangle, square, and rectangle).

K.12        The student will describe the location of one object relative to another (above, below, next to) and identify representations of plane geometric figures (circle, triangle, square, and rectangle) regardless of their position and orientation in space.

  K.13        The student will compare the size (larger, smaller) and shape of plane geometric figures (circle, triangle, square, and rectangle).

     

 

Shape of Things

Life Cycles 

After watching the video of "The Caterpillar and the Polliwog" by Jack Kent, the students created the life cycle of a butterfly using Pixie software.

K.6     The student will investigate and understand basic needs and life processes of plants and animals. Key concepts include
b)     plants and animals live and die (go through a life cycle); and
c)      offspring of plants and animals are similar but not identical to their parents and to one another.
