Summer Reading

Dear Parents, Statistics show that children who read daily improve their reading skills, comprehension, and test scores.  The best way for a child to be a successful reader with good comprehension is to read, read, and read some more, and talk about the reading.  Here is a website that is helpful for finding the “just right” books for your child to read over the summer: Google – leveled book list go to the 3rd one down that says “leveled book list” http://home.comcast.net/~ngiansante/  The lists can be overwhelming since they show many titles for different levels.  1. Click on the appropriate grade level 2. Look through list and choose books that are on the easy reading level for your child. The levels of books shown on this website are Guided Reading levels, which are instructional levels.  You want your child to have fun this summer and read on the independent, easy level.  For Example, if your child’s instructional level is Level J, Grade level 2.00, go down a level or two for easy, fun reading.  Reading at the easy level frees up your child’s brain to read with ease and understanding.  ENJOY and HAPPY READING!  Mrs. Segovia, BRES Reading Specialist

Notes from the Nurse

ATTENTION PARENTS OF RISING SIXTH GRADERS

Virginia state law requires that children who will be enrolled in the sixth grade in the fall must receive one additional dose of the Tdap - (tetanus) vaccine.  Children will NOT be able to attend school without this vaccine.  Please check with your child's physican and make sure that your child's immunizations are up-to-date.  You can submit proof of immunization to me up until Friday, June 13th, 2008.  After that, you will need to either mail or bring the proof of immunization to the middle school that your child will be attending.  Local health departments will provide this immunization free of charge.

MEDICATION PICK-UP

The end of the school year is quickly approaching!  Please remember to pick up your child's medication in the clinic prior to the last day of school.  The school is not able to allow your child to bring the medication home with them.  Many of these medications are expensive and we are required to dispose of them if they are not picked up by the last day of school.  Medication can be picked up during school hours through Friday, June 13th, 2008.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation!

HEALTH TREATMENT PLANS

If your child had a health treatment plan this year because of asthma, food allergies, diabetes, or any other medical condition - please remember that you will need a new one completed prior to the start of the next school year.  Forms will be sent home with students for your convenience but can also be downloaded from the Prince William Coutny Schools website.

CLOTHING RETURN

Clothes are kept in the clinic for children to borrow if they are ill, have an accident, or need a change of clothes due to rips or spills.  These clothes are supposed to be laundered and returned so that they may be loaNed to other students in need of them.  If your child borrowed clothing from the clinic this year please be sure and return the items prior tot the last day of school.

MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL

All medicine (over the counter or prescription) administered at school must have a medication authorization form on file in the clinic.  Prescription medicine must ahve a physician's signature on the form before medicine can be administered.  All medicine must be in it's original and sealed container, with the child's name on it  The form and medication must be brought to school by a parent or other adult and will be kept in the school clinic.
