Third Grade November Newsletter

Dear Parents and Families,

Wow!  Can you believe that we are already in the month of November?  Time sure does fly when you’re having fun and learning so much!  The third graders did an excellent job on their Indian/Pilgrim projects.  We were happy to see that the students were creative and really enjoyed the project.

The following is an overview of what our third graders will be doing this month in school:

Language Arts

Writing:  The students will work on their first school wide writing prompt which incorporates paragraph formation.  Students will continue working on capitalization, punctuation and sentence variety.  This month, there will be more of an emphasis on paragraph formation and main idea.

Reading:  The students will work on various forms of poetry.  Students will create acrostic, cinquain and free verse poems.  Stanzas and rhyme patterns are also certain aspects of poetry that students will master this month.  Students will be able to locate contractions in poetry and other forms or reading.  We will begin a study on suffixes and prefixes.

Science

In science, the students will begin working on the unit of ecosystems, habitats and adaptations.  This month, we will focus on the places animals live and how they adapt to their environments.  Third graders will also discuss how living and non-living things interact with one another to create ecosystems and communities.

Math

The students will work on addition and subtraction in math.  Students will group numbers into tens and hundreds while estimating and finding the solutions to various equations.  The introduction of games such as Go Collecting and How Many Hundreds? will provide students with various opportunities to work in small groups while mastering addition and subtraction objectives.

Social Studies

During this month, we will continue to discuss pilgrims and Indians, while relating it to Thanksgiving.  Toward the end of the month, we will begin discussing holidays across the world and make connections between various cultures.

As the weather gets colder, it’s very important that students are dressed warmly each day.  The suggestion is that they each have a warm coat or jacket.  When students are not dressed warmly, we can NOT take them outside for recess.  Please remind them of the importance of keeping warm during the fall months.

We want to thank all of the parents for the support and encouragement that you offer to your children throughout the school year.  It makes a great impact in their excitement and willingness to learn.  Thank you and please contact us with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Ms. Gamble

Mrs. Menzies
