Past Months Newsletters

Happy Roadrunner Family,

It’s very hard to believe we’re entering the month of March.  As always, the students are performing well in school and they’re learning more and more each day.  I’ve been extremely impressed with the academic growth in the lower grades and the academic rigor in the upper grades.  It’s apparent that the students want to succeed and they are having fun working towards academic success for this school year.

Academic success, what does this look like? For our students, this means successfully progressing in Reading, whether it’s the DRA2 for grades K-2 or the QRI for grades 3-5. Students on average should be performing a few months within or above their grade level. Students should also be working towards mathematical fluency.  Additionally, students should be completing all class work and homework.

It’s imperative for students to continue reading daily, practice writing, practice math facts like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Knowing their facts will help them to become mathematically fluent.

Lastly, I’d the stress the importance of always having a positive attitude in school and about school. These are all ways to show academic success.

Parents, I must say, your children continue to shine everyday.  The students at Coles are some of the most polite and caring students you’ll find anywhere.

Regards,

Happy February Roadrunner Family,

The month of February brings many opportunities to remember, to reflect, to celebrate, to celebrate reading and learning and most importantly, to always celebrate family.

As we move into February, we remember our Presidents for paving the way through leadership of our country. We honor famous African Americans who inspired and motivated many people of all backgrounds to unite. We look at reading as the doorway to successful learning and we look to you to continue to bring our Roadrunner Family together.

As I mentioned in my January newsletter, I firmly believe together we can take our students to another level of achievement.  We want to take them from good to great and with your help, we can.

Remember parents, this is your community school. I welcome your voices even when you may be dissatisfied with something in the school. The only way, I can make things better for our students, for our community and for our school is to hear directly from you.  As your principal, I welcome you as much as your children.

Come join us this month for all of the wonderful family oriented learning events and have fun. Again, Happy February and hope to see you soon!

Regards,

Mrs. Alfie Turner, Principal

Happy New Year! It’s so hard to believe we are now in January, 2008.  I trust you all had a wonderful relaxing break and were able to share some quality family time with your children. I’ve enjoyed my time off with my family, but I’m also so excited to start the 2nd half of the school year.
As you know, this is the time of year when we start planning heavily for the State SOLs.  It’s our goal to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), remain accredited and to earn the School of Excellence Award once again.  In order to do this, we must do well across the board on the SOLs and all of our subgroups areas must perform well.

Students in grades 3-5 must earn 85% or higher on the Common Formative Assessments (CFAs).  If the student can maintain 85% or higher on the CFAs, this is a good indicator that he or she will pass the SOLs.  Teachers will send reminders to parents and students for each upcoming CFA or other assessment. Please make sure your child is studying and preparing well for each assessment.  More information on CFA can be found on our website.  There is a link to all CFAs along with essential questions and answers that you may use with your child to prepare for the CFAs.

Very soon, we will start homework buddy groups. Please sign your child up. There will more information coming out soon about Homework Buddies.

Parents, I firmly believe together we can take our students to another level of achievement. However, I need your support. Please remember that I, along with my staff am working for the success of your children. Therefore, your positive support is greatly appreciated.

Happy New Year!
Mrs. Alfie Turner, Principal
