School Board Approved Boundaries and Grandfathering for Opening of Freedom and Battlefield High Schools, September 2004

The School Board approved boundaries for the opening of Battlefield and Freedom High Schools on June 26, 2002. The approved boundaries differed from the previously presented boundaries in that the Neabsco Hills and Highbridge areas were assigned to Potomac High School in the approved plan.

 The School Board also approved an amended implementation strategy for these boundaries. The implementation strategy is as follows:

bulletRising 9th and 10th graders in the Freedom and Battlefield High School attendance areas will attend the new school in fall 2004.
bulletRising 11th graders in the Freedom and Battlefield High School attendance areas will have a one-time choice to either attend the new school or remain at their present high school in fall 2004. There will be no second chance to select.
bulletThere will be no 12th grade at the Freedom or Battlefield High Schools in SY 2004-05.
bulletFor all other boundary areas moved from one existing high school to another existing high school:
bulletRising 9th graders only will move to the different high school in fall 2004;
bulletRising 9th graders in 2004, 2005 and 2006 with older siblings enrolled at the previously assigned high school will have the option of attending the previously assigned high school. In this case, the school system will only provide transportation while the older sibling is enrolled in high school. When the older sibling graduates, parents will be responsible for transportation.
bullet

No great-grandfathering will be permitted. That is, siblings who transfer into the high school of an older sibling will not be permitted to provide grandfathering rights to their younger sibling(s).
