Why Study History?
It's fun! Learning about the stories, people, and events of the past is like exploring a far away place. Discovering the different customs, beliefs, traditions, and technologies of the past can lead you to have a better understanding of the present. It is kind of like being a detective.
The skills you develop through the study of history include critical thinking, comparing and contrasting multiple points of view, and examining cause and effect. You'll also get to read great works from famous writers who have influenced students for decades and centuries beyond their deaths. Can you imagine writing something so important that people would want to read it hundreds of years after you had passed away?
Through the study of history, you'll also encounter many of the other subjects you study in school. The history of everything from the fine and performing arts, to sports and entertainment are all part of the human story.
You'll also learn about geography as you study the places of the past and present. Perhaps you have traveled extensively and can share your experiences with your classmates?
Finally, in our democracy, it is essential to have each generation learn from the past so they can prepare to lead in the future.
