THEMATIC UNITS

Definition:

The thematic unit is a multidisciplinary approach to organizing curriculum.  It is based on the development and orchestration of one unifying concept through which all content and skills are woven. The theme acts as a pattern for organizing ideas, materials, and actions for both teachers and students.  Themes can be developed for an entire year or shorter lengths of instruction.

Steps:

1.      Decide on a theme.

2.      Brainstorm for teaching strategies.

3.      Identify which subject area would use which strategy.

4.      Coordinate activities across the disciplines, such as research and writing ( social studies and language arts)

When to use:

Thematic units are effective in elementary and middle schools where teachers teach across disciplines or team with teachers from various disciplines.
