April 2007 Innovative Grants

The following grants were approved by the School Board for funding at their June 20, 2007 meeting.

Ten (10) grants were submitted for a total of $45,487. The Grant Committee selected the following six (6) for full or partial funding for a total of $16,650:

(1) Bull Run Middle School, $2,600 for "Eagles Soar with Respect," partial funding for a program which provides a school-wide approach to bullying prevention by addressing interventions on four levels: school-wide, classroom, individual, and community.

(2) Osbourn Park High School, $3,250 for "Freshman on Course for Ultimate Success (FOCUS)," partial funding for a program to improve the transition process for rising 9th graders by creating a mentorship program designed to close the achievement gap between low performing or "at risk" students and their counterparts.

(3) PWC Schools, Student Services Department, $1,800 for "No School Left Behind: AED's for all PWC Schools," partial funding to provide automated external defibrillators in three Prince William County Schools.

(4) PWC Schools, Media Production Department, $5,000 for "Performing Arts Series for the Kennedy Center," to provide funding for bus transportation for approximately 2,474 PWC students to attend teaching performances sponsored by the Kennedy Center which are held at Hylton High School.

(5) Saunders Middle School, $2,500 for "The Drum Circle in Music Class," to provide funding for a program which encourages students to participate in musical performance activities and develop a desire to pursue membership in performing musical ensembles.

(6) Stonewall Jackson High School, $1,500 for "Destination Graduation," partial funding for an intra-department program that focuses on developing appropriate decision making skills in students about what is involved in being a parent and addressing the impact of teen parenting on the individual and their family.

The Committee respectfully requests the Board to formally approve this proposal.
