Prince William County
offers gifted education services for students in grades four and five
who have qualified for placement. These services are offered through an
Elementary Gifted Center Program designed to offer a variety of
educational opportunities. Student center time is broken into learning
periods, each having its own set of goals:
LEARNING CENTERS
offer students 30 to 40 different areas for exploration and research.
These centers are further divided into levels of difficulty and depth.
This independent study time offers students the opportunity to make
decisions in choosing individual topics of interest and uses contracts
to guide students as they complete their research.
CHALLENGE TIME
ACTIVITIES are “mental calisthenics” involving critical thinking
skills in the areas of language, mathematics, and logic.
PROBLEM SOLVING
EXERCISES (Odyssey of the Mind) are activities that engage children
in defining the problem, brainstorming, and solution finding. The
emphasis is on divergent thinking and creativity. A secondary benefit
to the problem-solving exercises is the practice with group cooperation
in teams.
T.A.G. (Techniques
for Achieving Goals) are teacher directed lessons that are conducted to
assure that all students will receive group instruction, which
encourages higher level thinking skills.
I am excited about your
child joining our program and welcome any questions you may have.
Sincerely,
Mr. Kevin Fahy
