Stuck trying to figure out what to do this summer?
Here is a list of fun activities from the second grade team  to get you ready for third grade:
  • Keep a journal of activities that are done each day. This can also been done while on vacation. Try to put in as many details as you can remember.
  • Read some of your favorite books for 20-30 minutes daily  or start on a chapter book and read one chapter a day.
  • Visit the public library and participate in the Summer Quest Reading Program.
  • Take a family trip to Washington DC, Mount Vernon, Monticello, or Ferry Farm in Fredericksburg.
  • Continue to play the math games we learned this year. Some games that we learned include Tens Go Fish, Collect $1.00, Cover up, and Plus 9 or 10 Bingo.
  • Play games in the car while on road trips. You can play I Spy, count by 5s and 10s, make up story problems, or make a list of items in alphabetical order.
  • Go on a nature walk and look for animal habitats and examples of erosion.
  • Cook a meal together and use a recipe to practice measurement and fractions.
  • Sort seashells at the beach.  Sort by color, shape or even by the type of animal that left it behind.

Please remember to read with your child 15-20 minutes each day at home. Research shows that even this short amount of daily reading improves school performance. This reading is an important part of your child's reading development. Please remember that frequent trips to the public library promote good reading habits. You will find some excellent reading selections in the Easy Reader section at the public libraries. Ask the librarian if you are not familiar with this section.  Please remember that the monthly reading list is a requirement - not an optional activity.

We appreciate your support in signing the assignment notebook each day. This home/school communication tool is very important.
