The flu
season is upon us and it is a good time to review some useful facts.
Symptoms of the flu include: fever (100 degrees or greater), cough, sore
throat, body aches. Anyone with these symptoms should not attend school
until they feel better and the temperature returns to normal. The flu can
be transmitted to others for about 3-5 days. There is medication, if
prescribed by the doctor in the first few days, that can shorten the
duration and decrease the severity of symptoms. Children at home with the
flu should drink lots of fluids, rest, take Ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil) or
Acetaminophen (Tylenol) for fever and pain. Be careful of the combination
medications sold over the counter. They only make sense if your child has
ALL
the symptoms listed.
NEVER give a child
ASPIRIN (SALICYLIC ACID).
Aspirin, taken by children during the flu, is associated with Reye’s
Syndrome, a very serious disease that can attack the liver and the brain.
Prevention of flu transmission should be our focus. The best way to control
the spread of flu and colds is to wash hands as often as possible. Coughs
and sneezes should be covered with a tissue or children should cough into
the sleeves of their clothing, not their hands, as previously taught.
Teachers would appreciate any donations of
no-rinse
alcohol-based hand sanitizer (such as Purell)
for the classroom where water
may not be available. Frequently clean commonly used surfaces such as
phones, door handles, bathroom surfaces and eating surfaces. Keep towels
and pillow cases changed and laundered often. Make sure your child gets
plenty of sleep, eats a good healthy diet, drinks plenty of water and gets
daily fresh air and exercise. Let’s stay healthy in the New Year!

Family and Consumer
Science Department
|
The Family and Consumer Science
Department students have been busy recently with projects showing their
concern for others.
Some of the
sixth grade students made pet treats which were bagged up and delivered to
the Prince William Co. Animal Shelter by Mrs. Owens. Treats were used for
the pets in the shelter, as well as sent home with newly adopted pets.
Some eighth graders
baked gingerbread and sugar cookies which were then decorated by the Family
and Consumer Science Club. Cookies were offered to the staff for a donation
which was sent to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. A total of
$70.10 was collected. Thanks to all who were so generous with their
donations.
Mrs. Moonan’s 8th
grade students have rewritten a bread stuffing recipe to reduce the amount
of fat from 112 grams to 14 grams. They then carefully chopped onions,
celery and assorted gourmet breads. They added special seasonings and
flavored broth. They are offering this ready to bake stuffing, as well as
gourmet dried bread cubes, ready to be sprinkled on salads, to the staff for
a donation.
Funds raised from
donations will allow them to accomplish this entrepreneurial plan and then
turn the monies around to purchase grocery items to be used to prepare a
lunch for the drop in homeless shelter in February.
They are also
contemplating making some Mexican bread pudding! Let’s give our Family and
Consumer Science Department a big CONGRATULATIONS for all these wonderful
projects that will help so many other people.
We need to thank
Panera Bread, Prince William Parkway, Woodbridge, for their generous
contribution to department.

obtaining their Prince William County Public Library Card may apply through

or Mrs. Angell for your application form. Forms are returned to Fred Lynn
Library when completed.
Your Fred Lynn PTA Board has been busy over
the last few months, meeting and organizing. We have met with Mr. Payne and
the staff to learn about Fred Lynn Middle School and how parent involvement
works. We have made a PTA budget, developed a pan for the remainder of the
school year and became a PTA in good standing.
As an all new board that has never worked
for the middle school level, we have been working hard. The office staff
and lots of great volunteers have allowed us to do a faculty basketball
game, book fair, and to be present at back to school nights and parent
teacher conference night.
We are headed for a very successful school
year. This is the first time we have offered our students the chance to
enter the Virginia PTA Citizenship Essay Project. We are building a strong
leadership for Fred Lynn Middle School and want to put smiles on our
student’s faces. The PTA is not just the board: it is all of YOU too! Let
us hear from you.
