Elementary Instructional Day
The elementary instructional
day is 6.5 hours, with guidelines and descriptions of
instructional blocks of time, including time allocations,
remediation, and teacher planning time. Our day is broken into
many blocks of time. We have a 'Core' time, 'Core Extension',
'Special Services', and 'Encore' block. Below are the
definitions of each.
Core
– Instruction in reading/language arts, mathematics, science,
and
social studies.
Core
Extension –Needs-based extended instruction, not new
instruction, in reading/language arts, mathematics, science
and/or social studies. This shall include remediation and/or
enrichment, strings, and special services as appropriate. This
may include instruction in other encore areas, based upon
individual school needs.
Special
Services – Resource services such as special education,
Title I, gifted education, and English for Speakers of Other
Languages (ESOL).
Encore
– Instruction in art, music, physical education, and other
subjects
outside the core.
Rotation
– The scheduling of encore classes.
Our schedule provides consistency in the instructional day and
in the implementation of the Prince William County curriculum.
The block schedule allows the teachers to maximize instructional
time for curriculum delivery. It also provides the opportunity
for remediation during the school day, and daily individual and
grade level planning time for teachers. The schedule allows for
flexibility in the scheduling of lunch, recess, and the encore
subjects.
Each grade level has their
own individual block schedule. We rotate through specialist on a
10-day rotation. The rotation day will be posted on the front
page of the web site. Here is our
Specialist Schedule (Encore Block):
