Happy Fall! It's hard to believe
that we are coming down the
homestretch of the first
quarter! We've done some review
of basic skills that were
mastered in 3rd grade as well as
introduced many new objectives.
The students have settled into
their routine and we continue to
work on our class goals which
includes curtailing the
excessive talking, using
good manners and establishing
good work habits. We strive to
be quality students!
Here is a breakdown of what we
are doing in each subject area.

Math
Graphing, data collection,
probability
To find information on these
objectives, you can look in
their Math Handbook on pages

Reading
Each class is beginning to form
reading groups.
Reading groups
provide an opportunity for
children to apply the knowledge
of word origins, derivations,
synonyms, antonyms, and idioms
to determine the meaning of
words and phrases. What will
they do in their groups? Guided
reading, reading worksheets,
language arts games, and many
creative methods that make the
fourth grade reading program fun
for them.
Each 4th grade teacher is also
participating in a class book.
Ask your child what their class
is reading! Our objective for
this quarter is Author's
Purpose and Point of
View.

Virginia
History
Our emphasis in 4th grade is
Virginia History and this month
we will finish up Jamestown and
move into the Colonial era.
Here's a little Virginia History
trivia, did you know that
Jamestown, the first of the
original 13 Colonies, was
founded for the purpose of silk
cultivation. Silk was to be
traded with the Court of King
James. After blight fungus
destroyed the mulberry trees
(silkworm food), sericulturist
planted tobacco as a cash crop.
We are very fortunate to live in
Virginia,
the birthplace of the nation.
This is the perfect time of year
to venture out to our great
state and hit some of our
historical sites. As a team, we
will be heading to Mt. Vernon,
home of our first President,
George Washington.
Don't forget our trip is on
November 14 from 9:30 - 5:15. We
will get a tour through his
house, visit the colonial craft
exhibits, the museum and watch a
movie!
It will likely be chilly so
dressed appropriately.
We love your kids, but please
don't forget to pick them up by
5:15.

Coming in November - Marshall
will be hosting a Math Night
where students and parents will
visit classroom to see math in
action! It will be a fun night
for all. More information will
be announced in the coming
weeks.
Thanks for all of your support.
If you have any questions,
please feel free to contact us
either by note, phone or email.
We will get back to you as soon
as possible.
