Counseling

School counselors can meet with students regarding concerns such as: friendship problems, academic concerns, family concerns, divorce, loss of

a loved one, peer mediation, and goal setting. Parent permission is requested for ongoing concerns. A school counselor will only break confidentiality when a student shares the following information: someone is hurting them, they are going to hurt themselves, or they are going to hurt someone else.

Parent Resource Library

The school counseling program offers a number of different materials and resources available for parents.  These resources cover a wide range of different topics and situations that your family or child may be experiencing.  Such topics include how to talk to your child about the death of a loved one, getting through a family divorce or separation, etc.  Materials may be checked out through the guidance department.

Test Taking

There are several things you can do to help your child feel prepared and confident taking important tests. The following are some helpful hints for you and your child:

BEFORE A TEST

Get plenty of rest. 8-10 hours of sleep is recommended for elementary school students.

Eat a healthy, nutritious breakfast each morning of the test. It's hard to think on an empty stomach! Proteins and carbohydrates are good for energy and endurance. Avoid excessive sugar, caffeine, and chocolate.

Be prepared. Get all your materials ready. Bring two sharpened pencils, a good eraser, a cover sheet of paper, etc.

Relax. Do something relaxing the night before the test and try to stay calm during the test.

Have a positive attitude towards the test.

Be present and arrive on time each day of the test. This is important every school day, but it is especially important on test days since vital directions are given at the beginning.

Ask your child about the Test Taking skills they learned through classroom guidance. Students have been taught to listen and read the directions carefully; color in the answer dots completely with no stray marks; and relax before the test.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the counseling department located?

My office is now located at the end of the hall in the 2nd and 3rd grade pod.

How does a student request to see the counselor?

Any student may see the counselor by filling out a counselor form and

leaving it in the basket outside of my door.  Teachers have request forms in their rooms, and I have some outside of my office near the basket.

When will students see the school counselor?

I will be in the classroom for guidance lessons through out the year. I also see students individually and in small groups.

As a parent, how can I contact the counselor?

You may reach me by calling the school at (703) 494-3252, or by e-mailing me: trivettkl@pwcs.edu.
