February Message from the Principal
We have passed the halfway mark of our fourth school year and as always at this time of the school year things around here have been busy. Our student body continues to grow with the building of more new homes in our communities. Since coming back from winter break, we have registered 35 new students. Our enrollment is now at 778 students. To all of our new families, we say, “Welcome.” We are confident you will be very happy here and come to enjoy MWES as much as we do.
As many of you know, in September, the School Division will be opening a new elementary school (Fannie W. Fitzgerald Elementary) at the intersection of Cardinal and Benita Fitzgerald Drives. We are projected to lose approximately 100 students from our neighborhoods that will be transferring to the new school. I’m hoping that with the new construction that continues in our other neighborhoods, we won’t need to eliminate any classes or programs. We have begun to think about our budget for next year and are awaiting our first-round projections from the School Division’s budget office. If the funding is available, we will continue our application process for the International Baccalaureate Programme. Once our application has been accepted, this program will be fully implemented in grades kindergarten through fifth. Look for more information to follow on this program throughout the second semester.
As we enter the second semester, we must maintain our number one objective for each student to achieve to his/her fullest potential. Your children’s teachers will ensure that the classroom learning environment is rich in instruction and free from distractions. As the teachers revisit school rules and refresh students’ memories on what is expected from them in order to maintain a successful learning environment, we continue to seek your help as parents to encourage students to always follow our 3 Rs -- Respect Yourself, Respect Others, Respect Your School.
In addition to our busy academic schedule, we will continue to have several other exciting activities to look forward to as spring approaches. We hope to see all of you out for our Literacy Night on Feb. 7, and don’t forget that our library is open every first and third Thursday evenings for your family’s enjoyment. Also, we look forward to seeing everyone at upcoming PTO family night activities that promise to be fun for all. Watch for dates for all of our events so you can mark your calendars and plan to attend.
Your Principal,
Paula C. Jackson
