According to Punxsutawney Phil, that weather predicting Pennsylvania groundhog, we should look forward to six more weeks of winter. At least winter is a great season to spend some time with a good book. Our Panther Cubs have definitely been doing that!
Congratulations to these students for earning the most Reading Counts! points for their grade level for the second quarter: Isabelle Cordero in Ms. Bolton’s second grade class with 84 points with 84% comprehension, Carson Opela in Mr. Cooper’s third grade class with 160 points and 98% comprehension, Jason Nodjomian in Mr. Watts’fourth grade class with 137 points and 84% comprehension, and Shahamat Chowdhury in Ms. Thomas’ fifth grade class with 221 points and 86% comprehension. Outstanding!
All of our Reading Counts! readers did a great job “Hanging Out With Reading Counts!” this quarter—our mitten clotheslines are over flowing with all the mittens students created when they passed a Reading Counts! quiz. It is an impressive display! Don’t forget, you can access a list of all the Reading Counts! quizzes we own by going to the library page of our Williams School Website. Your student can check out books on his or her Lexile level from the public library and take the quizzes during school or during Open Library Night, which is the first and third Thursday of every month.
In addition to reading and taking RC! quizzes, our Panther Cubs have been working on library and research skills. Both fourth and fifth graders reviewed call numbers and practiced finding fiction books in the library. Then, fifth graders read poetry and listened for figurative language and rhyme schemes and fourth graders reviewed biographies.
Third graders continued to explore the different kinds of folktales by listening to a trickster tale, pour quoi tale, myth and fairytale. Second graders continued working with the Reading Counts! program by practicing finding books on their level using the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) , then using call numbers to locate books in the library and taking a practice Reading Counts! quiz together.
Our first graders listed what they thought they knew about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., then read a biography about Dr. King and changed those ideas that were verified by the book to facts. They were pleased to see all the facts they already knew!
The kinder cubs finished their unit on counting books and completed their own number flip book. We counted crocodiles, dancing animals, fish, and African animals. We even counted in Swahili!
Don’t forget to take advantage of Prince William County ’s subscription to World Book. It’s a great research tool for accurate, reliable and current information. To access the World Book Online :  Online Reference Center, World Book Kids, Spanish Encyclopedia, and the U.S. History and the Political Science & Law Research Libraries, type: http://www.worldbookonline.com
Thank you for your continued support as we work together to promote the joys of reading at Mary F. Williams. Remember to mark your calendars for Open Library Night, every first and third Thursday of the month. Come see your student take a RC! quiz or help him/her check out some books you’d like to read together. Reading for just 15 minutes a day with your child makes a big difference!
