    McAuliffe Summer Reading List       www.pwcs.edu/summerreading/2008/Mcauliffe.htm

Mission Statement

The school library is crucial to the development of students as lifelong learners and library users.  Our library supports the Prince William County curriculum in all areas of study.   Our goal is to assist all students in becoming active and creative locators, evaluators, and users of information to solve problems and to satisfy their own curiosity. We also hope to encourage a love for reading all genres.

        June, 2008                                                From the Library

We have been thinking about Summer Reading.  First we looked at Award winning books.  We looked at the Caldecott Books.  I read several books to the students and they picked one that they would like to illustrate.  In our next lessons, I introduced our McAuliffe Summer Reading List.  We talked about what strategies we use when we go to the library to find books, We used the I PICK strategy.  Also, we reviewed the information that the Chinn Librarians gave us about their Summer Quest reading program.  All students received a Summer Reading list and a blank postcard .to write to Ms. West. They are to write a note and illustrate the favorite part of one of the books they read this summer.  We can’t wait to see them when we come back to school on the hallway bulletin board.  Happy Reading!

In grades 3-5, we have also been thinking about Summer Reading.  First these students researched what the Caldecott, Newbery, and Coretta Scott King Awards were by using the internet.  Students put their information in a graphic organizer and shared the information they learned with the class at the end.  We reviewed strategies that we use to help us pick out books from the library.  One we concentrated on last week was finding out about authors. Sometimes this helps the reader understand the stories better.  Students picked two authors from a list that they might want to know a little about.  They looked on the internet and recorded some interesting information and picked several books by this author that they might be interested in reading.  I hope students will use this strategy to read new books from authors they don’t know.

Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader is a computer based reading recall and comprehension program.  Teachers let the students know their reading level and students are to pick out books on that level to read.  When they have finished reading the book, they take a five or ten question multiple choice quiz on the book.   It is very important that the student reads the book carefully to successfully answer the quiz questions.   This program is required in some classrooms and voluntary in others.  Click here to go to our Accelerated Reader Catalog.
