WHAT'S NEW

  • Have you thought about working?

Consider working part-time in your local cafeteria. You could leave home after putting your children on the bus and be back before the bus returns. Most shifts are between 9 a.m and 3 p.m. Work is Monday through Friday, with all school holidays and snow days off. Most of our staff members work close to home, in their own neighborhood schools. Wouldn’t you like to work with interesting people, help nourish our community’s children, and earn at least $10.85 per hour? Call 703.791.7314 now to schedule an interview.

  • Virtual Cafeteria

Students can visit our Virtual Cafeteria, select food items and compare their selections to USDA nutrition standards. As a result they will learn how to make healthy food choices at school and home.

  • School Food & Nutrition Services Earns District of Excellence Award

The School Nutrition Association (SNA) designated the Prince William County School Food and Nutrition Services operation as a District of Excellence in Child Nutrition.

This prestigious award recognizes school districts for accomplishments in administration, marketing nutrition, nutrition education and operations. Prince William County Schools was the first school district in Virginia to receive this recognition. At present there are five Virginia school districts and 84 nationwide to be awarded this certification.

 FRUIT & VEGETABLE FUN

Food and Nutrition Services will promote healthy eating by highlighting a fruit or vegetable each month at the elementary school. The goal of this promotion is to increase student’s appreciation for and consumption of fruits and vegetables. A 1998 USDA study revealed that fewer than 15% of elementary students eat the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables. The promotion will include serving the featured fruit or vegetable. During the month the food service staff will share jokes and nutrition facts about the food. The cafeteria will be decorated with pictures and food art featuring the food. A book about the food will be given away each month.

Food and Nutrition Services will host a tasting party for the class winning a monthly contest. The contest will be designed by each school. Theme suggestions for contest are cafeteria behavior, eating fruits and vegetables, or reading. The winning classroom will be served foods featuring the monthly fruit or vegetable. The food and Nutrition Services website will feature kid friendly recipes with the month’s fruit and vegetable for students to enjoy at home with their families.

The promotion will demonstrate that fruits and vegetables are both delicious, fun and are an important part of healthy eating.

   FOOD ALLERGIES & SPECIAL NEEDS

To help students avoid foods containing the most common food allergens (milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish and shell fish) a list of foods containing these ingredients has been developed.

The ingredient data may not be 100% accurate as manufacturers sometime change product formulas or vendors substitute product without our knowledge.

We hope this information will assist you in managing your child’s diet. If you need additional information, please call 703.791.7314 to speak to our dietitian.

Students with allergies can receive food substitutions when they provide a statement from a recognized medical authority that includes recommendations for alternate foods.
