School Food and Nutrition Services operates in each school to offer students nutritious, enjoyable, high-quality meals at a reasonable price. A complete lunch offering, at a minimum, includes an entree with bread, two side dishes, and milk. Several menu choices are available daily from which students can select a complete lunch. Breakfast can also be purchased at all schools. A complete breakfast consists of bread and/or meat products, a serving of fruit and/or vegetable, and milk. Other foods are available on an a la carte basis. Free and reduced price meals are available to students whose households qualify under federal standards. Applications for meal assistance are available from the office in your school, from the central office at 703.791.7314 or online. Over 700 food service professionals take pride in serving approximately 44,000 student lunches, 8,500 student breakfasts, and 1,750 staff meals are served daily in Prince William County Schools. Additionally, many customers make a la carte purchases. Meals planned by Registered Dietitians are based on USDA's initiative to improve nutritional quality of meals. Lunches are planned based on nutrient standards to provide student customers with 1/3 of the RDA for the essential nutrients, less than 30% total fat, and less than 10% total saturated fat. Breakfast menus are planned to provide students with 1/4 of the RDA for the essential nutrients, while including less than 30% total fat and 10% total saturated fat. All meals and a la carte items are reasonably priced to encourage participation while maintaining a self-supporting operation.
