The School Board Approved:
  • November 11–17 as American Education Week and National Geography Awareness Week;
  • November 11–15 as National School Psychology Awareness Week;
  • October 21–27 as Custodial Services Employee Appreciation Week;
  • An amendment to the original motion and resolution of June 20, 2012 appointing Dr. Michael Wooten as interim member to fill the Occoquan Magisterial seat to provide that his term runs until the qualified voters fill the vacancy by special election pursuant to the code of Virginia and that the person so elected has qualified. Election day is November 6;
  • The School Board meeting minutes for October 3;
  • Policy 494, “Energy Conservation,” which governs the use, monitoring, and conservation of energy and utility consumption throughout the School Division to include that all decisions related to the implementation of this policy should be firmly grounded in common sense and made with the needs of the students and teachers in mind; and
  • November 5–9 as Virginia Farm-To-School Week. 
Policies and Regulations:
First review of revisions to Policy 757, “Administering Medications.” (No action is required on first reading.)
 
Citizens’ Comment Time:
Citizens addressed the School Board on the following topics:
  • A Student’s appreciation of the PWCS education that opened the door to his current work at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology and his continued engagement with Prince William County opportunities ; and
  • Energy conservation and School Division appliances. 
Presentations:
Mr. Lionel White, supervisor of Planning, reported that the student membership count for the School Division for 2012–13 is 83,551. This is an increase of 1,916 students since last school year, a 2.3 % growth rate. 
 
Superintendent’s Time:
Dr. Steven L. Walts, Superintendent of Schools, made the following announcements:
  • A total of 17 Prince William County Public Schools students taking classes at the Governor's School @ Innovation Park completed the entire Prince William math continuum. They have taken Calculus B and C, and have moved on to either multi-variable calculus or linear algebra. Congratulations to the Governor's School Director Karen Dalfrey and her staff for propelling students to these heights.
  • Piper Sigrest, a junior who is enrolled in both the Governor’s School @ Innovation Park and Osbourn Park High School, is competing in the International Space Olympics in Russia. The Virginia Department of Education is sponsoring her trip. Our Media Production Services office is coordinating the Internet resources.
  • Ellis Elementary School has received authorization as an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. This is a significant accomplishment that takes several years. Congratulations to Principal Jewell Moore and her staff.
  • The architectural design of Piney Branch Elementary School, which opened in 2011, has earned Silver Certification from the Green Building Certification Institute. The design by Moseley Architects is recognized for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), and is our first fully LEED-certified school building.
  • The School Division is launching a new effort designed to highlight the success of students after they graduate. The Office of Media Production Services has put together the first of what will become a series of short updates of accomplishments of former PWCS students. (Click here to see video).

Meeting Information
School Board meetings are planned as follows. Unless otherwise indicated, meetings are held in the School Board Meeting Room at 14715 Bristow Road, Manassas. Citizens who wish to address the School Board under Citizens’ Time may notify the Board Clerk in writing, by phone, or by electronic mail prior to noon on the day of the meeting. Citizens may also sign up to speak prior to 6:55 p.m. on the day of the meeting.
Closed Sessions start at 6 p.m. and are followed by public sessions, which start at 7 p.m.
