The School Board Approved:
- November 12–16 as International Education Week;
- Appointments to the Gifted Education Advisory Committee for 2012–13;
- The Memorandum of Understanding with Prince William County Community Services for therapists to provide clinical services to Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) students enrolled at New Horizons;
- The Memorandum of Understanding with Northern Virginia Community College to allow high school students to take college-level courses and receive both college credit and high school credit toward graduation;
- The Memorandum of Understanding between the PWCS School of Practical Nursing and The Department of Veterans Affairs to use electronic transfer of enrollment information by educational institutions to The Department of Veterans Affairs;
- The payrolls for September;
- An easement to Prince William County for construction or maintenance of storm sewers located at Rockledge Elementary School;
- The Deed of Division, Dedication and Easement with the University of Virginia to dedicate approximately 24 acres of land to Prince William County for use as an elementary school site;
- The confirmation of the School Board poll approving the recommended candidates to the Compensation Study Committee;
- Minutes of the School Board meeting for October 17;
- The Superintendent’s appointee to the Career and Technical Education Advisory Council;
- The proposed changes to Policy 757, “Administering Medications,” that each school will provide at least two doses of auto-injectable epinephrine to be administered by a school nurse or employee of the School Board who is authorized and trained in the administration of epinephrine to any student believed to be having an anaphylactic reaction; and
- The proposed new high school course offerings for FY 2013–14 school year:
- Turf Grass Establishment and Maintenance;
- Production Systems; and
- Geospatial Technology II.
Citizens’ Comment Time:
A student addressed the School Board to state her gratitude and appreciation to her teachers and the School Division for her opportunities and education.
Presentations:
- Mr. Tim Healey, associate superintendent for Student Learning and Accountability, and Dr. Jennifer Cassata, director of Accountability, presented the Strategic Plan Report. The report is presented annually to the School Board to provide information on the School Division's performance on the measures identified in the plan. The measures include test results, program participation rates, graduation information, discipline rates, teacher licensure/endorsement data, organizational data, and the Divisionwide Survey results. - Mr. John Wallingford, director of Financial Services, gave a first-quarter budget report for FY 2013. The budget review covers revenues and expenditures from July 1–September 30. He also gave a brief summary of the ending balance for FY 2012.
Superintendent’s Time:
Dr. Steven L. Walts, Superintendent of Schools, made the following announcements:
- Piper Sigrest, a junior enrolled in both the Governor’s School @ Innovation Park and Osbourn Park High School, tied for fourth place in presentation of research papers and received the top score for her level on the math exam in the International Space Olympics held in Russia.
- The current on-time graduation rate for PWCS rose from 88% to 89%. This rate has climbed 5% in just four years.
- SPARK has received two grants that are helping to propel our students into global competitiveness. The Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association donated $5,513 for software that provides virtual training in building and operating robots, similar to how the Marines train their armed forces virtually. Lockheed Martin provided $39,500 to upgrade technology in the robotics arena. Robotics teams are thriving at every level in PWCS and robotics is in the middle and high school curriculum.
- Brenna McGrath from Forest Park High School and Nolan Uribe from Patriot High School are named National Hispanic Scholars by the College Board. These outstanding students qualified for recognition based on their grade point average and PSAT scores.
- Twenty-two outstanding student vocalists have been named to the 2012 Virginia Honors Choir. Selection to this prestigious 100 member choir is a competitive process that puts our students against the top high school vocal talent in Virginia.
- Dr. Walts thanked Dr. Michael E. Wooten, School Board member, for his interim service to the Occoquan District and the entire School Division. On November 6, Mrs. Lillie Jessie was elected as the School Board representative for the Occoquan District.
