The School Board Approved:

  • The Comprehensive One Stop Memorandum of Understanding Addendum between Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) and Prince William County (PWC) for the operation and cost sharing of services, including education that leads to a high school credential, improving English language skills, and/or obtaining U.S. citizenship;
  • The Site Letter of Agreement between PWCS and the Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment Systems (CASAS) to permit PWCS Adult Education to offer the National External Diploma Program (NEDP) to assess and certify the high school level competencies of adults and award a high school diploma to those adults who successfully complete its requirements;
  • The payrolls for the month of October;
  • The Reciprocal Easement and Development Agreement in regards to the 24 acres of land dedicated by the University of Virginia for the construction and development of an elementary school;
  • The application for FY 2013 Safe Routes to School Program grant for the Antietam Road sidewalk project. The program provides funds for infrastructure projects;
  • The confirmation of School Board poll to add a Legislative Priority to the effect that jurisdictions may meet legal notice requirements where there is no daily local newspaper having a general circulation in the locality by publishing such notices on the locality’s Web site or on radio and television; and
  • The School Board meeting minutes for November 20.
 Policies and Regulations:
First review of revisions to Policy 810, “Facilities Planning.” (No action is required on first review.)

Citizen’s Comments:
  • A citizen addressed the School Board on the proposed 201314 school year calendar; and
  • Two students spoke about the opportunities gained from computer instruction at Forest Park High School and how the Governor’s School @ Innovation Park has changed academic careers.
 Presentations:
  • Dr. Jennifer Cassata, director of Accountability, presented the proposed 201314 school calendar. The School Board is scheduled to vote on the calendar on December 19.
  • Mrs. Vivian McGettigan, chief internal auditor, presented the 2013 Annual Audit Plan.
  • Mr. Gil Trenum, Brentsville District, discussed with the Board moving the Avendale development attendance area along Route 28 from T. Clay Wood Elementary School to the Nokesville Elementary School attendance area. T. Clay Wood is now at capacity and early discussion about this move may alleviate a future problem. Mr. Trenum requested this be on the agenda for the December 19 School Board meeting.
 Superintendent’s Time:
Dr. Steven L. Walts, Superintendent of Schools, made the following comments:
  • The November issue of American School and University magazine features Piney Branch Elementary and PACE West Schools for their outstanding architecture design. Piney Branch was designed by Moseley Architects; PACE West by Architecture, Inc.
  • Many PWCS students will be studying ballet with local professional groups and will be performing this holiday season. About 50 students will perform in the Manassas Ballet Theatre’s production of “The Nutcracker” at the Hylton Performing Arts Center during four performances from December 14–23. Dancers with the Gainesville Ballet School will perform “A Children’s Nutcracker” at Battlefield High School on December 8.  Please see the School Division Web site announcements for names of students who will perform.
  • Forest Park and Battlefield High School students provided refurbished computers to families from West Gate, Minnieville, and Williams Elementary Schools in a Virginia STAR event hosted by Forest Park High School. This initiative began in 2000 at Forest Park and has spread to 17 school divisions across the state, thanks to the hard work of the school’s Information Technology Specialty Program Coordinator Chuck Drake. Since that time, over 4,700 refurbished computers have been distributed to schools and students within our School Division.
A Public Hearing is scheduled for December 19, 2012, on the Woodbridge District School Board vacancy.
