Annual Organizational Meeting:
The School Board took the following actions at its annual organizational meeting:
- Dr. Michael Otaigbe, Coles District, was elected as Vice Chairman of the Prince William County School Board for 2013;
- Mr. Steven Keen was appointed as the School Board’s interim Woodbridge District representative;
- Ms. Deborah Urban was appointed as clerk of the Prince William County School Board for 2013;
- The Board will require that the clerk and deputy clerk furnish a corporate surety bond of $10,000 conditioned upon the faithful performance and discharge of their duties, premium for such bonds to be paid by the School Board;
- The location of regular School Board meetings was established as 14715 Bristow Road, Manassas, Virginia, on the first and third Wednesdays of the months of January through June and September through December. Closed Session meetings shall convene at 6 p.m. and public meetings shall convene at 7 p.m.;
- Ms. Rae E. Darlington, Deputy Superintendent, was appointed designee of the Division Superintendent to attend meetings of the School Board in the absence or inability of the Superintendent to attend; and
- The Board approved membership in professional organizations and the appointment of representatives. Adjustments or reappointments may be made to organizations so as to include the newly appointed interim School Board member.
Regular School Board Meeting
The School Board Approved:
- February as African-American History Month and Career and Technical Education Month;
- February 4–8 as National School Counseling Week;
- March as National Athletic Training Month;
- The Pathway to Baccalaureate Program Memorandum of Understanding Agreement between Northern Virginia Community College and Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) to offer a supportive environment to facilitate the successful transition, retention, graduation, and transfer of participating students from high school, through NOVA, and on to a university of the student's choice. This agreement will also ensure that the Pathway counselors have all the tools needed to be successful in guiding PWCS students;
- January 20–26 as School Principals Week;
- The payrolls for November 2012;
- A request to increase the School Operating Fund budget by $1,824,818.93 and directed the Superintendent to forward the appropriate documents to the Board of County Supervisors. These adjustments are due to new revenues received and the increase in grant programs where notification to the School Division was after the approval of the budget, and receipt of donations;
- The resolution authorizing the Superintendent of Schools to submit all reports and other necessary filings for the receipts of Impact Aid and to provide all assurances otherwise required by the Improving America’s Schools Act of 1994;
- The increase in FY 2013 revenue and expense budget by $16,125 for the Governor’s School @ Innovation Park for receipt of donations/grants;
- The funding agreement for the Governor’s School @ Innovation Park;
- The resolution recognizing the Windy Knoll Farm Center for Environmental Education for their efforts in educating PWCS students on agricultural and conservation issues;
- The School Board meeting minutes for December 19; and
- The Disciplinary Hearing meeting minutes for December 12.
Presentations:
- Mr. Lionel White, supervisor of Planning, reported on recommended boundary attendance areas for Sudley area elementary schools from the Boundary Planning Committee. The six elementary schools included in this report are Ellis, Loch Lomond, Mullen, Sinclair, Sudley, and West Gate. Click here to view the PowerPoint presentation.
- Mrs. Rita Goss, associate superintendent for Eastern Elementary Schools, gave information on the implementation of the newly adopted math textbooks. The presentation was requested by School Board member Mrs. Alyson Satterwhite, Gainesville District.
Superintendent’s Time:
Dr. Steven L. Walts, Superintendent of Schools, made the following comments:
- On behalf of the School Division’s Leadership Team, I congratulate Mr. Steven Keen on his appointment to the School Board. I look forward to working with you, Mr. Keen.
- Once again, I thank Mrs. Denita Ramirez for her many years of service on the School Board. She represented the Woodbridge District in an outstanding manner.
- Congratulations to Dr. Otaigbe for being appointed as Vice Chairman to the School Board and my thanks and appreciation to Mrs. Lisa Bell for service as Vice Chairman this past year.
- Three principals have been nominated for the Prince William County Principal of the Year Award. Those nominated are Mr. David Huckestein, Woodbridge High School; Mr. Clint Mitchell, Bel Air Elementary School; and Mrs. Michele Salzano, Gravely Elementary School.
- Fourteen teachers have been nominated for Prince William County Teacher of the Year. The nomination packets for both awards will be reviewed by a selection committee and the winners will be announced in the spring. Please see our Web page announcements for more information.
- Parents and employees can sign up for our electronic newsletter, PWCS E-News, to receive important announcements, especially emergency and weather-related announcements, and to follow PWCS on Facebook and Twitter. Find the link to the E-News page by clicking on “News and Updates” on the School Division’s home page, at pwcs.edu.
- It is also important that parents update their email address and telephone numbers with their children’s schools if there has been any change. These addresses are used for automated notifications and are very important.
