The School Board Approved:

  • March as:
    Music in our Schools Month;
    Theater in our Schools Month;
    Youth Art Month; and
    Purchasing Month;
  • April 22–26 as Playground Safety Week;
  • The Memorandum of Understanding between the Prince William Board of County Supervisors (BOCS), Prince William Crew Association, and Prince William County Public Schools, for the purpose of the sport of scholastic rowing and related activities at Lake Ridge Park;
  • The amount of $100,000 compensation to acquire the necessary land on Horner Road for the construction of Kilby Elementary School replacement;
  • The Resolution and letter from the School Board requesting the BOCS to transfer $5,527,008 from the available proffer funds account to the School Division construction account;
  • The School Board meeting minutes of February 6;
  • The Disciplinary Hearing minutes of February 13; and
  • Adoption of the textbooks recommended by the Science Textbook Committee following extensive review of the options. Click to see list of textbooks.
Citizen’s Comments:

Citizens addressed the School Board on the following topics:
  • Carlos Rivera, a student from Fred M. Lynn Middle School, spoke to the Board about the benefits of PWCS work with Rachel’s Challenge. Rachel’s Challenge is a series of student empowering programs and strategies that equip students and adults to combat bullying. Rachel Scott was the first student to be killed at Columbine High School in April 1999.
  • Piper Sigrest, a student from Osbourn Park High School and the Governor’s School, spoke of her membership with the SuperNOVA Robotics Team and what a positive impact it has had on her education.
  • The annual budget, teacher salaries, and classroom sizes.
  • The proposed pool at the 12th high school.
Superintendent’s Time:
Dr. Steven L. Walts, Superintendent of Schools, announced that several schools and students have recently been honored for stellar accomplishments, and they are:
  • “Automotive Whiz Kids” who recently won the following honors: Samara Tapp, the only female competitor at the Universal Technical Institute’s Top Tech Challenge, finished in second place, and Giovanni Carvalho finished in third place. Their combined scores earned Hylton High School the top high school honor. Congratulations to these students and to their teacher Edward Stevens.
  • Vikram Pratha, an eighth-grader at Marsteller Middle School, competed against more than 150 “Math Whiz Kids” at the regional MATHCOUNTS competition. He placed second and earned a trip to the state tournament. Marsteller’s team placed sixth overall. Great job, students and coach Carl Dennis.
  • Five state wrestling champions: In Division Double A, from Brentsville District High School in the 106-lb. weight class, Jeffrey Walker; and in the 195-lb. weight class, Zach Roseberry. In Division Triple A, from Forest Park High School in the 106-lb. weight class, Tommy Aloi; in the 132-lb. weight class,

Meeting Information
School Board meetings are planned as follows. Unless otherwise indicated, meetings are held in the School Board Meeting Room at 14715 Bristow Road, Manassas. Citizens who wish to address the School Board under Citizens’ Time may notify the Board Clerk in writing, by phone, or by electronic mail prior to noon on the day of the meeting. Citizens may also sign up to speak prior to 6:55 p.m. on the day of the meeting.
Closed Sessions start at 6 p.m. and are followed by public sessions, which start at 7 p.m.
