Superintendent’s Time:
Dr. Steven L. Walts, Superintendent of Schools, made the following announcements:
- The Virginia Department of Education recently highlighted Prince William County Public Schools’ selection as one of 12 School Divisions in the state that have been named to The College Board’s Advanced Placement District Honor Roll. This is recognition for simultaneously increasing access to AP courses and raising achievement on the examinations. It shows the progress we have made with students who have traditionally not enrolled in these advanced courses to achieve new levels of success. We can take great pride in our increased participation and performance.
- Students in Prince William County Public Schools, across the nation, and even in other countries around the world, tuned in to a Webcast at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 8, to a program on wetlands and their importance, produced on location in Panama by our very own Media Production Services staff.
- This is one of several grant–funded programs that tie our curriculum to vital issues and locations worldwide. Classrooms in grades 4-8 are encouraged to participate. The program is connected to national and state science education standards. For more information, go to WetlandsLIVE.pwnet.org. Later this month a Spanish-language production will also be available. I am pleased to note also that when our production team was in Panama, they received excellent local press coverage.
- The U.S. Green Building Council has awarded T. Clay Wood Elementary School and Piney Branch Elementary School a Silver Level of Certification in the “LEED” Green Building Rating System. “LEED” stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. This means that some recycled construction materials were used in the construction of these schools. Our new elementary school in Haymarket will also meet LEED standards.
- To date, inclement weather in October, January, and March has caused us to have two delayed starts, one early release, and five closures. The Commonwealth of Virginia requires a minimum of 180 school days or 990 instructional hours each year. Since Prince William County Public Schools has additional time beyond the state minimums in terms of the length of the school day – not including lunch and recess – our approved calendar still provides us with just under three days worth of hours before we would fall below the number of required instructional hours. And now with spring weather forecasts ahead, we look forward to completing the school year as scheduled.
Virginia High School League Junior Varsity Sports:
Mr. Gil Trenum, Brentsville District School Board member, discussed the possibility of updating regulations and policies to allow eighth-grade students, on a school-by-school basis, to try out for and participate on certain freshman or junior varsity athletic teams.
