Calling All Math Whiz Kids for Challenge 24
January 4, 2013
Is there a math whiz in your family? Between now and March 22, Prince William County elementary and middle schools will hold grade-level competitions for students in grades 3–8 to determine their entry in the 12th Annual Mathematics Challenge 24 Tournament scheduled in April. Interested students should check with their teachers to see if their school participates in this tournament.
In the “Game of 24,” students apply their math skills in computation, problem solving, number sense, critical thinking, and pattern sensing to find a way to mathematically combine four numbers to equal 24. Depending on their grade level, students use whole numbers, fractions, and decimals and solve multi-step problems using integers and algebraic notation.
The Mathematics Challenge 24 Tournament will be held on Saturday, April 6, from 8:15 a.m.–noon at Godwin Middle School, located at 14800 Darbydale Avenue in Woodbridge. Students in grades 3–8 who win the grade-level competitions at their individual schools may enter the tournament. Trophies are awarded to the winners at each grade level. This competition is organized by the PWCS Office of Student Learning - Mathematics.
