Melonie Yielding, fourth grade teacher and math lead teacher at Ellis Elementary, is one of six finalists for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Yielding has held many leadership roles at Ellis across multiple subject areas, including math and social studies lead teacher, fourth grade lead teacher, science textbook committee member, and new teacher mentor. With her team, she created curriculum units for science and social studies and lesson plans that incorporated the Virginia Standards of Learning with the cross-curriculum themes of the school’s International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. She also created video notes for all fourth-grade science and social studies standards. In addition to her teaching duties, she is the co-facilitator for robotics and has been the Challenge 24 Math Club facilitator for four years.

The award program is administered by the National Science Foundation on behalf of the White House. The Virginia finalists were selected from among more than 80 nominees.

The 2016 winners will be announced by the president next year.
