Students with firefightersStudents in Emily Sasz’s Virginia Preschool Initiative class (VPI+) at Featherstone Elementary School had some special visitors recently as firefighters Jared Lawrence, Chuk Li, and Tiana Cuffe from the Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department (OWL VFD) dropped by to share their experiences as volunteers in the community. The visit was a part of the students’ lessons about community helpers.

“The preschoolers were very excited and wanted to learn more about firefighters. In class we created rescue missions, designed fire trucks, and made equipment,” Sasz explained.

Sasz invited the OWL VFD to enhance the lessons. The opportunity allowed students to hear from professionals about what it’s like being a firefighter and learn about fire safety from the experts. The highlight of the visit was the chance for students to climb on the fire engine.
