What is a Mammal?

Mammals have four characteristics that set them apart from other animals.

  1. They have hair or fur covering their body.
  2. They have live births (they don't lay eggs).
  3. Female mammals have mammary glands and can feed their young.
  4. They are warm-blooded.
  5. They breathe air through their lungs.

Pandas

Pandas are mammals

Habitat:  Panda bears live in bamboo forests in China.  They live in the wild.

Physical Characteristics:  Panda's have black and white fur.  They have black fur around their eyes and on their ears. Full grown pandas can grow five and six feet tall and sometimes weigh over 200 pounds.  Pandas walk on all four feet.  They have claws for protection.

Diet:  Panda's eat bamboo leaves and stems.  They sometimes eat other plants, small animals, or fish.

Mouse

Mice are mammals.

Habitat: Mice live all over in forests, fields, mountains, brushlands, hot or cold climates, even wet or dry climates. Mice can live as pets in a cage, but when they live in the wild, most mice live in burrows in the ground. Some mice build nests and live in trees.

Physical Characteristics:  Mice have very sharp front teeth that never stop growing. They have point faces and long tails. Mice have strong legs that help it run fast.

Diet:  Mice are not picky eaters - they will generally eat what they can find. Different types of mice may prefer to eat seeds, roots, caterpillar, or grasshoppers.

Rat

Rats are mammals. There are two main types of rats: brown rats and black rats.

Habitat: Both types of rats live near humans. They may live around houses or on farms. They are also common around city dumps. The black rat prefers to live in high places like the tops of trees while the brown rat prefers to live near the ground.

Physical Characteristics:  Rats have large, sharp front teeth that grow throughout their life. Rats are covered with fur. They have a long, pointed nose and large, hairless ears. Rats vary in size from about 8 inches to 10 inches from their nose to the tips of their tails.

Diet:  Black rats are vegetarians. That means they eat all kinds of vegetables, fruits, nuts, wheat, and rice. Brown rats eat these items, but also eat insects, birds' eggs, and meat.

Jaguars

Jaguars are mammals.

Habitat: Jaguars often live in jungles and thick forests. They have also been known to live in mountains and deserts.

Physical Characteristics:  Jaguars have spots that help them blen in with the land around them. Jaguars are good swimmers. They are very strong and have thick muscles. They have sharp claws.

Diet:  Jaguars are hunters. They eat animals like wild pigs, monkeys, deer, and fish.

Cheetahs

Cheetahs are mammals.

Habitat: Cheetahs live in Africa.  Cheetahs like to live in grassland, plains, and bush country.  They can run fastest in open spaces.

Physical Characteristics:  Male cheetahs weight about 125 pounds.  Cheetahs have yellow fur with black spots.  They walk on all four feet.  Cheetahs can run fast!  Cheetahs can run up to 70 miles per hour.  That's faster than we usually drive our cars!

Diet:  Cheetahs hunt for their food every few days.  They hunt and eat other animals in the wild.

Zebras

Zebras are mammals.

Habitat: Zebras live in the wilds of Africa.  Different zebras live in different places in Africa - some live in dry areas, while others live in grassy or hilly areas.

Physical Characteristics:  Zebras look like horses with black and white stripes.  Their manes are short.  Zebras are 4-5 feet tall and weigh about 600 pounds.  Zebras walk on all four feet.

Diet:  Zebras eat grass.  They have special teeth that helps them eat grass.

Seal

Seals are mammals.

Habitat: Seals can live in both the water and on land. Seals can live in both salt water and fresh water.

Physical Characteristics: Seals have ears that are just tiny openings on the sides of their head. Seals use their back legs as a huge fin to help them swim. Seals have a thick layer of blubber all of their body to keep them warm. Seals can stay underwater without breathing for up to 20 minutes.

Diet: Seals eat many different types of fish. They also eat crabs, clams, whrimp, octopuses and other sea creatures.

Whales

Whales are mammals.

Habitat: Whales live in the ocean.  They must stay in warmer waters, so they migrate to warmer water in the winter and cooler water in the summer.

Physical Characteristics:  The blue whale is the biggest animal on the Earth...even bigger than a dinosaur!  Whales breathe through their blowhole.  They must come to the surface of the water to breathe.  Some whales have teeth - others have baleen.  Baleen is a little like a giant comb used to trap food in a whale's mouth

Diet: Baleen whales eat krill and schools of small fish.  They may eat as much as 4,000 pounds of food everyday!  WOW!  Whales that have teeth eat larger fish and squid.  Some of these whales even eat sea turtles and sea birds.

Monkeys

Monkeys are mammals.

Habitat: Monkeys live in Africa, South America, and Asia.  They like rain forests, grasslands, and woodlands.  They spend most of their time in trees.  They build nests with branches and leaves.

Physical Characteristics:  Monkeys have dark fur covering their body.  They do not have hair on their face and ears.

Diet:  Monkeys eat leaves, flowers, seeds, fruits, insects, nuts and meat.  They also eat small animals.

 

Koalas

Koalas are mammals.

Habitat: Koalas live in the eucalyptus tree forest of Australia. 

Physical Characteristics:  Koalas are about three feet long and weigh 20 pounds or less.  Koalas have brownish-gray fur that covers most of their body.  White fur covers their stomach and chin.  They have strong front legs and sharp claws.

Diet:  Koalas eat eucalyptus leaves and bark.  Koalas almost never drink.

Yak

A yak is a mammal.

Habitat:  Yaks live mostly in the mountains of Tibet.  It is cold and icy there.

Physical Characteristics: Wild yaks have black or brown hair that is long.  Domesticated yaks (yaks that are pets) sometimes are white.  All yaks have horns.  Their long hair keeps them warm.  Wild yaks stand about 6 feet tall and weigh up to 1,200 pounds.

Diet:  Yaks graze on coarse grasses.

Cats

A cat is a mammal.

Habitat:  There are many animals in the cat family.  Lions, tigers, leopards, cheetahs, jaguars, mountain lion, ocelots, and lynx - not to mention house cats.  House cats live where humans live.

Physical Characteristics:  A cat's body is covered in fur.  Cats have sharp claws that retract into their paws.  They purr when they are content.

Diet:  All cats eat meat.  Cats are hunters.  Cats need water.  House cats need to eat at least twice a day.

Brown Bear

Habitat:  Brown bears live in many parts of the world - even in North America.  Brown bears live near mountains, rivers, and meadows.  Bears live in their own territory - which means they like to live alone.

Physical Characteristics:  Brown bears come in many sizes and colors.  Some brown bears weigh only around 300 pounds, while others weigh as much at 1,500 pounds!  Did you know not all brown bears are brown?  Some are blond, red, and even black!  Brown bears have long, shaggy fur and long claws to dig up food. 

Diet:  Brown bears are omnivores - which means they'll eat almost anything!  Bears eat mice, roots, berries, nuts, grass, and bugs, meat, and fish.

Dolphin

A dolphin is a mammal.

Habitat:  Dolphins live in the oceans of the world.

Physical Characteristics:  A dolphin has a blowhole in the top of it's head that it breathes through.  A dolphin swims by moving its tail up and down.  A dolphin has sharp pointed teeth. 

Diet: Dolphins eat fish or squid.

Giraffe

A giraffe is a mammal.

Habitat:  Giraffes live in Africa mainly in savannas.  An African savanna is land that is covered mostly be grass but with patches of trees.

Physical Characteristics:  Giraffes have large brown spots all over their bodies.  Giraffes have very long necks.  They usually stand between 14 and 18 feet tall.  They have long tongues.  Giraffes have four small horns on their heads.  The average adult giraffe weighs nearly 1800 pounds.

Diet:  Giraffes are herbivores.  That means they eat plants.  Giraffes eat leaves, leaf buds, fruit, grass, melons, corn, and other plants. 

Lion

A lion is a mammal.

Habitat:  Lions live mostly in Africa.  Some lions live in India.  Lions live in flat, open grasslands.

Physical Characteristics:  Lions have sharp claws and teeth.  Male lions have big furry manes that grows around their head and neck.  Lions roar louder than any other cat.  Lions are 8 to 10 feet long and can weigh as much as 500 pounds.  Lions have large eyes and can see well at night.

Diet:  Lions are carnivores.  That means they eat meat.  Lions eat zebras, antelopes, wildebeests, gazelles, wild pigs, and warthogs

Puma

A puma is a mammal.

Habitat:  Pumas live in many different parts of the world.  They can live in jungles, mountains, grasslands, and deserts.  Pumas like high places like cliffs and mountains.  They rest in trees or under bushes.

Physical Characteristics:  Pumas have brown or tan fur.  They have sharp claws.  Pumas do not roar like lions.  Pumas purr like house cats.  Pumas are great jumpers.  Pumas can hear and see very well.

Diet:  Pumas are predators.  They eat whatever they can find.  Pumas eat deer, elk, bighorn sheep, rabbits, ducks, chipmunks and more.  It can take up to two weeks for pumas to finish eating one animal!

Gorilla

A gorilla is a mammal.

Habitat:  Gorillas live in family groups.   Lowland gorillas live in rain forest in west and central Africa.  Mountain gorillas live in east Africa.

Physical Characteristics:  A gorilla is closely related to apes.  Gorillas are the biggest of all primates.  Gorillas have feet and hands that have flat nails.  They can easily grab and hold items with their five-fingered hands.   Male gorillas can weigh over 400 pounds and grow up to 6 feet tall.  Gorillas have dark hair all over their body except on the face and chest.   Young gorillas can swing through trees while older gorillas travel on the ground.

Diet:  Gorillas are herbivores.  This means they eat plants.  Gorillas eat roots, leaves, plant stems, celery, ginger, berries and honey.  Gorillas don't drink water - they get plenty of water from the plants and fruit they eat.

Dog

A dog is a mammal.

Habitat:  Dogs live wherever people live. 

Physical Characteristics:  Dogs have four legs and are covered by hair.  Some dogs have long hair and others have short hair.  They have tails and paws.

Diet:  Dogs eat meat.  They also eat grass.  Most house pets eat dog food.

Ape

An ape is a mammal.

Habitat:  Apes live in Africa and Asia.  They live near trees.  Apes live together in groups and need a strong leader who protects his troop.

Physical Characteristics:  Apes are a member of the primate family but they have no tails.  Chimpanzees, orangutans, and gorillas are all apes.  Large apes can weigh up to 450 pounds.  The smallest apes are only 30 pounds. 

Diet:  Apes eat leaves, insects, eggs, and vines.  Some apes even eat meat.  Most apes spend 6 - 8 hours a day looking for food.

 

Rabbit

A rabbit is a mammal.

Habitat:  Rabbits can live in the city or in the country.  They make their homes in burrows or forms found in the ground.

Physical Characteristics:  Rabbits have long ears, strong legs, and whiskers.  Their front legs are short for balancing while their back legs are longer to help them jump.  Rabbits have claws on each paw (foot).

Diet:  Rabbits eat plants such as carrots, leafy green vegetation, roots, and various flowers.

Squirrel

A squirrel is a mammal.

Habitat:  Most squirrels build summer homes of leaves and twigs in a tree. In the winter, they find warmer homes in a tree hollow to protect them from the cold.

Physical Characteristics:  Squirrels can be several different colors including gray, red and brown. It depends on where they live. They have very good eyesight, large ears, and a bushy tail. Their hind feet are large and strong and they have sharp claws for climbing. Squirrels also have powerful, sharp teeth.

Diet:  Squirrels eat a variety of nuts.

Rhinoceros

A rhino is a mammal.

Habitat:  Rhinos live in the African plains, swampy areas of Asia, and the Asian forest.  It all depends on what type of rhino it is!

Physical Characteristics:  All rhinos have a thick gray skin.  Rhinos have at least one horn on their nose.  They could be up to 6 feet tall and weigh 5,000 pounds.  Rhinos have three toes covered by a hoof on their feet.

Diet:  Rhinos are herbivores.  That means they only eat plants.  Rhinos mainly eat grass and tree leaves.

Fox

A fox is a mammal.

Habitat:  Most foxes live in the country, but some now live in towns and cities.  Foxes live in most parts of the world.

Physical Characteristics:  Foxes usually weigh under 15 pounds.  Foxes are different colors.  Some have white, red, yellow,  or tan coats depending on the type of fox that it is.  Foxes have long bushy tails.

Diet:  Foxes eat small animals such as rabbits.  They also eat berries, fruit, worms, and beetles.

Tiger

A tiger is a mammal.

Habitat: Tigers live only on the continent of Asia and some of the islands of Asia.  They live in forests, marshy areas, and dry grasslands.

Physical Characteristics:  Tigers are yellow-orange with black stripes.  There are some white tigers, too.  The largest tigers weigh 700 pounds and may be as long as 13 feet. Their fur is very heavy.  Most tigers are nocturnal.  They have excellent eyesight and hearing.

Diet:  Tigers are predators.  They hunt almost any kind of animal, including deer, pigs, antelope, buffalo, elk, moose, or bears.

Hippopotamus

Habitat:  Hippos can live on land, but they prefer to spend most of their time in water.  It likes to have grassy or swampy areas nearby.  Wild hippos live only in Africa.

Physical Characteristics:  Hippos are large, gray animals.  They only have a few long, stiff hairs on them called bristles.  The hippo's mouth is wide and deep - and they have long teeth.  One tooth from the hippo's lower jaw may weigh over six pounds.

Diet:  Hippos are herbivores.  That means they are plant eaters.  Hippos can live for weeks without eating if it must.

Horse

A horse is a mammal.

Habitat:  Horse live in a variety of places, including North America, China, Arabia, and even Iceland.  Many horses live on horse farms. 

Physical Characteristics:  Horses have hoofs, long tails, manes, and large eyes.  The average horse stands about 5 feet tall.  Horses may be black, white, brown, or a mixture of these colors.  The largest horses can be up to 2000 pounds.

Diet:  Horses like to graze in pastures.  They are also fed grain and hay.

Elephant

An elephant is a mammal.

Habitat:  Elephants live in Africa south of the Sahara desert and in Asia.

Physical Characteristics:  The elephant is the largest land animal in the world.  There are two main types:  African elephant and the Asian elephant.  Elephants can live up to 60 years and die when they lose their teeth and can no longer chew.  Elephants skin is gray and wrinkled.  They have large ears and a trunk.

Diet:  Elephants eat for about 16 hours each day.  They feed on trees, shrubs and grass.  The elephant uses it's long trunk to put its food into it's mouth.

Hamster

A hamster is a mammal.

Habitat: Wild hamsters live in burrows where they make nests and store food. Domestic hamsters (hamsters that are pets) live in cages and like plenty of room to run and climb.

Physical Characteristics: Hamsters vary in size. Some can be as large as a rabbit. Others are no bigger than a mouse. They have long incisor teeth and cheek pouches to store their food. 

Diet: Hamsters eat seeds, grain, fruits, green vegetation, and living prey such as insect larvae.

Bats

A bat is a mammal.

Habitat: Bats live throughout most of the world. They do not live in the world's coldest places. They sleep during the dat in dark places like caves and attics. 

Physical Characteristics: Bats look alot like a mouse with wings. They are dark and furry with bright eyes. A bat's wings are made of thin skin that can bend. Bats have a sharp-hooked claw, which they use to hang upside-down. 

Diet: Most bats in North America live by eating insects. Bats living in other places may eat fruit, birds, lizards, frogs, fish, flowers, and more. 

Wolf

A wolf is a mammal.

Habitat: Wolves live in forests and on the tundra of Canada and Alaska in North America.

Physical Characteristics: A wolf may weigh up to 175 pounds. A male wolf may stand over 42 inches tall and be 6 1/2 feet long! Wolves are usually gray, but may be black, brown, white, or a combination of colors. They also have long, bushy tails.

Diet: Wolves kill large animals, such as deer, moose, and caribou to eat. If they cannot find or catch a large animal, wolves will eat mice, birds, fish, or beavers.

Deer

A deer is a mammal.

Habitat: Deer live in a variety of places. Mule deer like the edges of forest and brush in mountains and hills. Whitetails like forest edges, farmland, and open woodland.

Physical Characteristics: Deer are brown or gray with black and white trim. Deer have long legs and big, dark eyes. Deer have antlers. Deer can grow to be about 250 pounds.

Diet: Deer are called herbivores, because the eat plants. Deer eat soft, green plants and berries, leaves, twigs, and acorns.

Gazelle

A gazelle is a mammal.

Habitat: Gazelles are found in Asia and Africa. Some make their home in mountainous regions, others in the desert or in shrubby areas known as the bush. Most live on grassy plains.

Physical Characteristics: Most gazelles have sandy brown coats with white undersides and rumps. Many have black and white markings on their faces. They have long pointed ears and large eyes. Most have long V- or S- shaped horns.

Diet: Gazelles eat grass, herbs, and woody plants. They sometime munch on leaves, buds and shoots from trees and shrubs. Some may also use their hoofs to dig up roots.

 

What is a reptile?

Reptiles have characteristics that set them apart from other animals.

  1. Reptiles have backbones.
  2. Their bodies are covered with scales.
  3. Reptiles are cold blooded.
  4. Their babies are hatched or sometimes born live.
  5. Reptiles breathe air through their lungs.

Alligator

An alligator is a reptile.

Habitat: Alligators usually live in fresh water, but sometimes they live in a fresh/salt water mix.  They prefer swamps, marshes, streams, and lagoons.

Physical Characteristics:  Alligators have a tough, blackish skin made up of scales.  The scales on top of it's body are tough and look like armor, while the alligator's belly has smooth and flat scales.  It's four legs are short and keep the alligator near the ground.  They have strong, cone-shaped teeth.

Diet:  Alligators are meat eaters.  They eat many different animals such as fish, turtles, snakes, and even rabbits, and young deer.

Crocodile

A crocodile is a reptile.

Habitat: Most crocodiles spend their lives in the water, but they have to come to the surface to breathe. Crocodiles live in warm climates.

Physical Characteristics: Crocodiles have dry scaly skin. They lay eggs from which their young hatch. Crocodiles vary in size. Some are as small as 4 feet long while others grow to over 26 feet long. Crocodiles have between 60 and 80 teeth. 

Diet: Crocodiles eat just about anything it can catch. It likes all kinds of fish, birds, and mammals. Crocodiles will only eat if they are hungry. 

Tree Vipers

A tree viper is a reptile.

Habitat: Tree Vipers live in trees and rarely touch the ground.  The live in the tropical forests of Asia, Africa, Central, and South America.

Physical Characteristics:  Tree Vipers have large heads and bodies 2 to 5 feet long.  Tree Vipers can be many different colors such as green, black, orange, yellow, red, blue, brown, and purple.  The have fangs that are hollow where their venom, a deadly poison, flows.

Diet:  Tree Vipers drink moisture that collects on leaves of the tropical forests.  They usually eat frogs, lizards, birds, and small mammals.

Cobra

A cobra is a reptile.

Habitat:  Cobras live in Africa, India, and many parts of Asia.  They are usually found close to water.  They make their homes under rocks and fallen trees.

Physical Characteristics:  Cobra's skin is smooth and can be different colors and patterns.  Some cobras can grow as long as 18 feet!  Cobras are deaf and uses it's sight and tongue to find prey.  A cobra has two fangs that are hollow for venom to flow through.

Diet:  Cobras eat rats, mice, frogs, birds, and eggs.  Sometimes cobras even eat other snakes.  Cobras cannot chew their food, but instead swallow it whole.

Snake

A snake is a reptile.

Habitat:  Snakes live all over the world. Some snakes live in deserts while others live in forests, grasslands, or mountains. Some burrow underground while others live above.

Physical Characteristics:  Snakes are covered with tough, dry scales. They hatch their babies from eggs. They breathe air into their lungs. They have no legs. Snakes can be very small or the largest snakes in the world grow as long as five men lying head to toe.

Diet:  Snakes are meat eaters. Some catch and hold their prey with their teeth before eating it live. Others coil around their prey and squeeze it so it cannot breathe. Some snakes poison their catch before eating it. Snakes eat their food whole. Depending on it's size a snake will eat insects, frogs, mice, rats, other snakes, and larger animals, too.

Turtles

A turtle is a reptile.

Habitat:  Turtles live in many places.  There are freshwater turtles that live in lakes, ponds, and rivers.  There are also land turtles that live in jungles, forests, and deserts.

Physical Characteristics:  Turtles have scales on their head, legs, and tail.  Turtles can be many sizes.  Some turtles are small and others are large.  They weigh as little as 3 pounds or as much as 1,500 pounds.  Turtles are the only reptiles with a shell.  Turtles don't have teeth.  They bite with a sharp beak.

Diet:  It depends on the type of turtle as to what they eat.  Tortoises mostly eat plants, while sea turtle eat jellyfish, crabs, and other sea animals.  Freshwater turtles eat plants, insects, fish, and snails.

Lizard

A lizard is a reptile.

Habitat:  Lizards live all over the world depending on the species or type of lizard. Most of them live in warm zones like deserts, jungles, and rain forests.

Physical Characteristics:  Lizards bodies are covered with scales. Underneath the scales are several layers of skin that protects their insides. Lizards have long tongues.

Diet: Depending on the type of lizard, their diet varies. Some lizards eat smaller insects like crickets. Other insects like fruit. Some lizards have even been known to eat mammals, reptiles, fish, and snails!

Komodo Dragon

A komodo dragon is a reptile.

Habitat:  Komodo dragons live on islands that are part of Indonesia.  The main islands are called Komodo, Rintja, Padar,  and Flores.

Physical Characteristics:  Komodo dragons are the biggest lizards in the world.  They have big, flat heads, strong, short legs, and long, thick bodies.  They usually are 8 - 10 feet long.  They can weigh as much as 550 pounds.  Komodo dragons have long, forked tongues and many sharp teeth.

Diet: Komodo dragons eat goats, pigs, and deer.  They don't like to share their food.  Komodo dragons can smell dead animals from up to 7 miles away and will go to find it to eat.

 

Annelids

What is an annelid?

There are a few characteristics that make an animal an annelid.

  1. An annelid is boneless.
  2. An annelid can live in almost all environments.
  3. An annelid has no respiratory system.

Leeches

A leech is an annelid.

Habitat:  Leeches live almost anywhere they find still water or moisture.

Physical Characteristics:  A leech looks like a flattened earthworm.  The shape of their body changes as it moves.  Leeches have a small sucker on the underside of their head.  They have a larger sucker on the rear of their body.

Diet:  Leeches eat earthworms and other small invertebrates.  They've been known to eat their own young.  Some leeches feed on flesh and body fluids of other animals, too.

Worm

Habitat:  Worms are found all over the world.  Some worms live in the ground, while others like water and damp place.  Worms live in both salty seawater and freshwater ponds and streams.

Physical Characteristics:  Worms are different shapes and colors.  They can be long, pink, and wiggly like earthworms or short and brown with shiny hairs like a sea mouse worm.  Some worms are so tiny that you can only see them with a microscope while others can grow up to 40 feet long!  WOW!  Worms have no legs, but segments that stretch and change shape that helps them move where they need to me.

Diet:  Worms eat more than just soil!  They feed on the remains of plants and animals, too.  Certain types of worms have killed other small animals for their food.  And worms such as tapeworms, must have a "host" to survive. 

 

What is a Fish?

Fish have special characteristics that make them fish!

1.  Fish live in the water and are cold-blooded.

2.  Fish have fins, a tail, gills, and scales.

3.  Most fish lay eggs.

4.  Fish have a skeleton.


Siamese Fighting Fish

A Siamese fighting fish is part of the fish family.

Habitat:  Siamese fighting fish originally came from the watery areas in Thailand, a country in Southeast Asia.

Physical Characteristics:  Siamese fighting fish can be found in many different beautiful colors.  They are generally 2 - 3 inches long.  They have graceful, flowing fins.

Diet:  Siamese fighting fish feed on water insects, small shrimp, or crabs.  They eat prey that is easy to catch.

Sharks

A shark is a fish.

Habitat:  Sharks live in the oceans of the world.

Physical Characteristics:  A shark's skeleton is made of cartilage covered by a tough, leathery skin.  Sharks are made to swim with their mouth open - that's how the shark gets it's oxygen.  A shark must constantly swim in order to get it's needed oxygen.  A shark has dozens of sharp teeth set in rows.

Diet:  Sharks are hunters.  Sharks, depending on the type of shark, eat many things.  Sharks eat krill, fish, and squid.

 

What is a crustacean?

There are several characteristics of crustaceans.

1.  All crustaceans are boneless.

2.  Most of them live in or near the sea.

3.  Crustaceans have hard shells and jointed legs.


 

Crab

A crab is a crustacean.

Habitat:  Most crabs live in the sea.  A few crabs live in seaside trees.  There are both fresh water crabs and sea crabs.

Physical Characteristics:  Crabs have hard outer shells and jointed legs.  A crab usually has three or four pairs of walking legs.  Many crabs have large front claws.   A crab can be less than an inch wide or more than 12 feet across!

Diet:  Crabs eat lots of different food.  Some crabs eat dead scraps.  They also catch live prey.  They sometimes eat fish, smaller crabs, oysters, and other sea animals.  Certain types of crabs eat seaweed and leaves.

 

What is a bird?

There are many characteristics of birds.

1.  All birds are covered with feathers.

2.  Birds lay eggs.

3.  Birds have wings.

4.  Birds have very light bones that are usually hollow.


 

Duck

A duck is a bird.

Habitat:  Many ducks live on farms.  Ducks live in many parts of the world near ponds, lakes, marshes, or sea coasts.

Physical Characteristics:  Ducks are plump birds with stubby legs.  They have broad, webbed feet.  Their body is covered with feathers and they have a pointed beak.  Ducks can be white or a blend of many colors.

Diet:  Ducks eat greens.  They strain food from water with their bills.  They also eat water plants. 

Eagle

An eagle is a bird.

Habitat:  Eagles are found all over the world.  They like to make their homes in high nests.  They live alone.

Physical Characteristics:  Eagles have feather all over it's body.  Some eagles have brown and golden feathers.  Bald eagles have white feathers covering their heads.  Eagles have broad wings and sharp claws.  They also have a hooded beak.

Diet:  Eagles are predators.  They hunt other animals for food.  They each rodents, squirrels, chipmunks, fish, and other small animals.

Parakeet

An eagle is a bird.

Habitat:  Wild parakeets live in places with grasslands like Australia and Africa.

Physical Characteristics:  Parakeets fall into one of four color groups: green, yellow, blue, and white. Parakeets bodies are covered with feathers.

Diet:  Wild parakeets eat seeding grasses. Pet parakeets eat canary seed.

 

What is an amphibian?

There are many characteristics that make an animal an amphibian.

1.  Their skin is smooth and slimy.

2.  They can breathe through their skin and sometimes their lungs.

3.  Amphibians are cold-blooded.

4.  Amphibians have a complex life cycle.


 

Tree Frog

A tree frog is an amphibian.

Habitat:  Tree frogs spend part of their lives in trees or bushes.  They are smaller than bullfrogs.  They can be found in many areas of the world.

Physical Characteristics:  Tree frogs have slim waists and long arms.  They have wide, sticky discs at the tips of their toes to help them climb and leap among the branches and leaves.  Spring peepers, a type of tree frog, is well-known for it's "call" or noise that it makes.

Diet:  Frogs mostly eat insects.  They have long tongues that help them catch insects around them.

What is a marsupial?

The main characteristics that distinguishes a marsupial:

They carry their young in a pouch.


 
Kangaroo

A kangaroo is a marsupial.

Habitat:  Kangaroos live in the wild in Australia, New Guinea and other nearby small islands. They may live in the desert, swamp or forests among rocks or cliffs or high up in trees.

Physical Characteristics:  There are many different types of kangaroos that vary in shape and size. Kangaroos bounce on powerful back legs to move from place to place. They have four toes, but five fingers in their front paws. They are covered in hair and female kangaroos have a pouch for their babies.

Diet:  Kangaroos eat mainly grass and other green plants.

What is an arachnid?

There are many characteristics that distinguishes an arachnid:

  1. All arachnids have eight legs.
  2. They have a hard exoskeleton.
  3. Their body has two main parts: a head and an abdomen.

Tarantula

A tarantula is an arachnid.

Habitat:  Tarantulas live around the world. Many turantulas live in burrows in the ground. Others live in trees.

Physical Characteristics:  Tarantulas are large, hairy spiders. They can be anywhere from two to ten inches across. They have eight eyes.

Diet:  Tarantulas eat insects like crickets and grasshoppers. Larger tarantulas can eat larger animals like lizards and frogs.
