ABOUT STONEWALL MIDDLE SCHOOL

Stonewall is named for Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson.  The school opened as a middle school in 1974, after serving as the original Stonewall Jackson High School.  The building was converted to a middle school upon the completion of a new high school building.  At that time, sixth grade students were transferred from the elementary school to the middle school, and the ninth grade moved from what had been the junior high school to the high school.

COMMUNITIES SERVED

Students at Stonewall Middle come from near and far.  Many travel from as far away as the Haymarket, Bull Run Mountain, and Gainesville communities, and others live as close as Westgate, Irongate and Sudley.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Stonewall Middle School is in its third year of implementation of the Middle Years International Baccalaureate Programme (IBMYP).

The IB offers students a challenging, comprehensive academic program, based on a European model, and was established by the International Baccalaureate Organization based in Geneva, Switzerland.  The aim of the International Baccalaureate Program is to awaken the intelligence of students and teach them to recognize the relationships between school subjects and the world outside.  This is accomplished by combining knowledge, experience and critical observation.

The program encompasses eight different subject areas, as well as five overarching themes that connect the subjects.  Requirements include community service and portfolios of achievement.  Two hundred sixty three Stonewall Middle School students in grades sixth through eight currently participate in the program.

ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS

Stonewall Middle School operates a site-based SIGNET (gifted education) program.  Students meet with the resource teacher on a rotating schedule so that they do not miss the same classes each week.  The sessions alternate between small group classes, which are directly related to the grade level SOLs (Standards of Learning), and independent study projects on broad topics related to the middle school curriculum.  Eighth grade students also complete an independent study, which includes a power point presentation.  Other special enrichment opportunities include "Math Counts," "Knowledge Masters" and "VA Young Readers."

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES & SPORTS

Like most middle schools, Stonewall offers the traditional after-school clubs and athletic teams.  However, the staff is particularly pleased with the success of two of the school's newest clubs, The Builders Club and the Historical Gamers Society.  The Builders Club is a community service group sponsored through Kiwanis Club.

Students participate in a variety of service projects throughout the community, such as visiting retirement homes and homeless shelters, and raising money for the American Cancer Society and the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

Participants in the Historical Gamers Society recreate historical military battles and hypothetical historical battles, which gives them a perspective on history outside the context of the classroom.  Students use strategy and teamwork to outwit one other - and hopefully learn something in the process.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARENT & COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Parents are a vital part of the Stonewall school community.  They are invited and encouraged to become involved: as volunteers in the school offices and classrooms, and as members of the PTO.  Opportunities are available for classroom visits that allow parents the opportunity to see students at work.  Of course, parents are encouraged to support their students as they display their talents as members of athletic teams, music groups and the many other opportunities offered during the school year.

WHAT MAKES OUR SCHOOL UNIQUE?

Stonewall's strength is derived from the diversity of its student and staff population.  Many of its students live in the most rural parts of Prince William County.  There they experience the ever-shrinking rural, farming area of Virginia, and live next door to people whose ancestors came here during the era of the Battle of Manassas.

Other students live within walking distance of the school, right across or down the street, and are accustomed to changing neighborhoods where new families routinely move in and out on a regular basis.  Stonewall's staff helps make it special.  This year, the school has 16 new staff members, some of whom are new to teaching and some that have recently moved into the area.  On the other hand, seven staff members have been at the school since it opened as a middle school in 1974.  Stonewall is proud of its efforts to capitalize on its diversity as it strives to meet the needs of an ever-changing school and community.
