PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
GIFTED EDUCATION PROGRAM
Information About The Identification Process

Prince William County offers gifted education services for students in grades six, seven, and eight who qualify for placement in the intellectual aptitude component of the Gifted Education Program. In addition, Lake Ridge Middle offers services for students in the specific academic aptitude component.

For students attending Lake Ridge Middle School, these services are offered at the school. This program is designed to offer a variety of educational opportunities that provide enrichment and extension of the classroom curriculum. Students participating in the program attend several periods one day a week. To receive such services, students must qualify for services in the area of intellectual aptitude or specific academic aptitude.

The Identification/Placement process begins with a review of the student's school records. As the process continues, standardized test scores, classroom grades, and information from teachers will be considered. The parent questionnaire you received will also be included in the profile. Other information such as samples of student work may be considered. Profiles are reviewed by the School Level Identification/Placement Committee and forwarded to the Division Level Placement Committee for a decision. Both Identification/Placement Committees are composed of representatives from administration and guidance, as well as members of the gifted education staff and classroom teachers. After all the information is collected, the student profile is reviewed by both a School Level and a Division Level Identification/Placement Committee. This Identification process usually takes six to eight weeks to complete. Parents are notified in writing of the results.

Parent Referral packets are available in the Guidance Office.
