The Student Assistance Program provides comprehensive K-12 substance abuse, conflict resolution, violence prevention and intervention services.  Eight Student Assistance Program Specialists cover all middle and high schools and provide the following:

  • Substance Abuse Recovery Groups
  • Concerned Others Groups
  • Life Skills Groups
  • Anger Management Groups
  • Drug Education Groups
  • Classroom Lessons On Drug Education And Prevention
  • Drug-Free Clubs
  • School Wide Prevention Activities
  • Leadership Training

The Student Assistance and Prevention Programs Office coordinates the following:

  • Peer Training programs at most high schools together with the base schools. Student practice activities, participate in special events, and conduct short workshops, all related to diversity and anti-bias.
  • At the middle school level, Diversity Clubs provide the school with a group of leaders to support the message of diversity, inclusion, anti-bullying and anti-bias.
  • A Diversity Summit is held in conjunction with George Mason University and the Prince William County Office on Youth every spring.
  • Facilitators from Prince William County Public Schools conduct trainings for the middle school program.
  • The Peer Mediation Program receives training by professional mediators each year. An annual conference brings together new student mediators with experienced student mediators.

The Office of Student Assistance and Prevention Programs works closely with the Office of Student Management and Alternative Programs (OSMAP) in collecting drug screening information and easing the transition for students back into mainstream education.

The Office of Student Assistance and Prevention Programs offers a unique intensive educational and self-assessment after-school hours program (IMPACT) for parents and students involved in a violation of the Code of Behavior for alcohol or substance abuse offense and referred by their Principal.

The Focus on Tobacco Program (FOT) is designed to meet the needs of first-time violators of the tobacco portion of the Code of Behavior.

The Effective Communication Strategies (ECS) Program is an evening alternative to suspension programs for students who have received referrals for bullying or sexual harassment behaviors, and for their parents. This program is taught by school social workers and school counselors.

The Office of Student Assistance and Prevention Programs joins in the anti-bullying directive to provide training, evaluation and support to the growing Olweus Bullying Prevention Program.

Prevention Perspectives, a parent newsletter, is distributed twice annually.

The Office of Student Assistance and Prevention Programs works closely with other community organizations like the Office on Youth, and Community Service Board Programs in meeting the needs of the youth and families in Prince William County.

SUICIDE PREVENTION PROGRAM

The Office of Student Assistance and Prevention Programs coordinates the PWCPS Critical Incident Team to provide support to the schools during the time of crisis due to student or teacher death or injury.

The Office of Student Assistance and Prevention Programs has developed a comprehensive suicide prevention training program for new and experienced teachers to detect signs of depression and signs of suicidal behaviors. Parent education programs and youth screening programs are also available.
