Summer Reading Program

The purpose of the Summer Reading Program is to encourage students to enjoy quality
literature and to continue developing their independent reading skills. Student participation
in the program is voluntary. Students who choose to participate in the program are required
to complete a minimum number of readings over the summer.

To help you remember what you read:

1.While the story is being read, be able to tell the reader what happened in the beginning of the story and what happened last. 

2.Tell the reader one thing that the main character did in the story. 

3.Tell the reader if the story could really happen.

 To receive extra credit the student must:

1.Read 5 books.

2.Make a list of each book's Title and Author.

3. Bring the list with a written statement from a parent/guardian that the student completed the reading.

4. Submit the book list and statement by the second week of school in September.

While reading your book make note of the setting, main characters, and plot or story problem. Children who read a lot become good readers. Please encourage your child to read over the summer. We strongly urge our future students to participate in the Summer Reading Program.

Include in your log: Book Title; date of reading; start page number; end page number; words and phrases that help you remember the story from this portion of the book read so far.

Try to find books that fit your reading level, so that you can practice reading independently.  As you read each book keep a Book Log citing the pages read each time and a brief summary of that portion of the book. Keep this log with the summaries in a journal or spiral notebook.

Keep this information in a journal or spiral notebook. After writing the paragraph, rate the book in one of the following categories:
