Josephine's Quilt Story  While traveling west with her family in 1850, a young girl makes a patchwork quilt that tells of the experiences of her journey. 
Home Place  While out hiking, a family discovers an old deserted house and clues about the people who once lived there. 
Be Good to Eddie Lee  Jim, Bud, and Christy go into the woods to hunt for frog eggs. Eddie Lee, a Downs Syndrome child, follows. Eddie Lee and Christy develop a friendship through their discovery of nature. 
A Country Far Away  This story of two boys, one urban and Western, one Sub-Saharan African, shows their day from morning to night. 
Nathaniel Talking  Nathaniel B. Free is s nine-year-old poet who raps, chants, questions, and rhymes on the subjects of education and family life. 
Princess Furball A princess in a coat of a thousand furs hides her identity from a king who falls in love with her.
Jack and the Beanstalk Kellogg's colorful retelling is faithful in spirit to Joseph Jacob's original tale. The language is contemporary with some older phrases preserved to maintain the flavor of the characters.
Sarah, Plain and Tall After the death of his wife, a father invites a mail-order bride to live with his family in their prairie home. The children are captivated by her and hope that she will stay.
The Rag Coat Minna is going to school and needs a winter coat. This Appalachian tale shows how the ladies of her community come together to quilt a coat of fabric Minna has selected.
Tikki Tikki Tembo This Chinese tale explains why parents give their children short names. It involves what's in a name, safety, trickery, problem solving, and a possible introduction to pourquoi stories.
Something Big Has Been Here This collection of humorously illustrated, funny poems on a variety of topics will provide inspiration for poetry writing.
Dumpling Soup Marisa is an Asian American girl who lives in Hawaii. Every New Year's the family goes to grandma's house to make mandoo (dumplings); Marisa's aren't perfect, but they are delicious.

The Widow's Broom Incredible illustrations married to a text create a mystery to make the reader think. The book teachers a lesson as well.
Owl Moon This gentle, poetic narrative shows the relationship between a girl and her father. Their silent walk through the winter night gives a glimpse at the relationships between man and nature.

Nathaniel Talking  Nathaniel is a nine-year old who raps, chants, questions and rhymes on the subject of life.
The People Could Fly:American Black Folktales  Twenty-four tales divided into four groups: animal tales, fantasy tales, tales of the supernatural, and tales of freedom. 
Babe the Gallant Pig  A pig with the remarkable ability to speak kindly to sheep wins a victory in a dog trial meet. 
Jaha and Jamil Went Down the Hill:  An African Mother Goose  New African rhymes with all the fun of the original Mother Goose while interweaving aspects of African life, both modern and traditional. 
Fables Caldecott winner of one-page fables.
Holes Both serious and funny. Stanley Yelnats is sent to a correctional camp in the Texas desert where he finds his first real friend, a treasure, and a new sense of himself.

A Taste of Blackberries  This is the story of a young boy's experience with the sudden death of his closest friend.
The Castle in the Attic A gift of a toy castle, complete with silver knight, introduces William to an adventure involving magic and a personal guest.
Call it Courage This is a survival story in which a young Polynesian boy defies a taboo, steals a much needed spear from an idol, fights dangerous animals, and escapes from cannibals.
Little House in the Big Woods A pioneer couple with three young children live in a snug log cabin at the edge of the deep Wisconsin woods. Pa hunts, traps, and farms. Ma makes her own cheese and maple sugar. This is a wonderful picture of family life in the 1860's.
