Dear Tyler Parents,
Welcome
back and congratulations to a great start to the 2008-2009 school year.
The theme for the upcoming school year is "Tyler Elementary
School-Kingdom of Student Discovery...Where Learning is an Adventure".
The theme addresses and signifies Tyler's commitment to "Providing a World Class
Education" and offering and environment for
students to have an exciting, relevant and challenging educational
experience.
Our
first week back to school was a huge success. It was very exciting to
feel the positive and enthusiastic energy for learning in the building.
As many of you may already know, Tyler Elementary achieved
many
great accomplishments during the 2007-2008 school year, including
earning the Virginia
Index of Performance Award
and attaining significant increases in our preliminary SOL student
achievement data. The Tyler Staff and I look forward to
working
with you and your child(ren) and building on our current successes.
During
the first weeks of school, all students will be participating in fire
drills and one hazardous weather drill. One of our school goals is to
provide a safe and secure learning environment for all students and, to
reinforce this goal, we will practice evacuation and safety procedures
on a regular basis. We also have a visitor sign in system for
all
parents and family members. It is very important
that all
visitors report to the main office and be prepared to provide a
driver's license or identificaton prior to entering the building.
Please
make note of our Tyler "Back to School Nights" on September 16th
(Kindergarten-2nd grades) and 17th 3rd-5th grades) at 7PM.
During
the Back to School Nights, you will be provided with information
regarding our school programs and your child's teacher will provde a
description and background information pertaining to classroom
procedures and the curriculum.
On
October 12, Tyler will be celebrating its 40th anniversary and a
ceremony will be held at 2PM to recognize the many years of tradition,
innovations and accomplishments of our life long learners.
Please
contact the school for additional information regarding our celebration.
Thank
you for your ongoing support of Tyler's vision and your child's
education. We look forward to a fantastic school year and
hope to
see you at our Back to School Nights.
Sincerely,
Matthew

News from the
Nurse
Welcome to a new school year!
As the
full tiem nurse at Tyler, it is my goal to create and environment of
wellness fro all students so that healthy bodies may concentrate on
strong learning! The clinic can be a very busy place.
Wehen
students arrived in the clinic they are assessed for symptoms of
contagious illness. Parents will be called when their student
presents with active vomiting, diarrhea or with a temperature of 100
degrees or higher. Pleawe have a plan prearranged so that
someone
is available to take the sick child home within 45 minutes of being
called. Rashes, persistent coughin, uncontrollable nasal drainage,
lethargy, or an injury are also reasons that you may receive a call
from the clinic.
School Staff cannot administer medications to students without the
appropriate paperwork on file in the clinic. If your child
should
require medication during the school day, a parent must bring the
medication to school and complete the necessary froms. Staff
is
required to have written physician authorization to administer any
child's prescription medication. Please obtain PWCS
Regulation
757-4 for further information.
If your child has chronic health concern, please contact the school
nurse so arrangements can be made to provide care. Students
with
asthma, diabetes, seizures, or lifet threreaetning allergies may
require care during school hours. Providing a Health Reatment
Plan will hlp ensure propfer care.
Vision and Hearing Screening will begin in the next few weeks.
All kindergarten and third graders will be screened in
accordance
with state regulations. If the screening indicates a possible
deficit in vision or hearing, you will receive written notification
asking that you follow up with your physician. Anyone
interested
in volunteering with the Lion's Club screenings on September 16, 2008,
please contact Nurse Kay.
