HAPPY

AFRICAN-AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH!

The Instructional Calendar that comes home every month should be previewed so that you are aware of what we are teaching. The websites that are on page 2 allow for you to look at the monthly objectives and utilize the sites to find activities that can reinforce the objectives, at home.

Today you have received a pink letter that explained the CoGat assessments that were given to the 3rd graders in November. Please review the data and keep for future reference. Our grade level will begin our SIMULATION assessments in March! These tests measure what your child has or hasn’t mastered. We test from K-3 in these tests and it allows us to format our instruction leading up to the Spring SOLs. We will be sending home study guides to help with the maintaining of these taught objectives…Please review them with your child on a nightly basis.

The winter has FINALLY arrived. It is extremely cold outdoors and we ask that you please send your child with a hooded jacket, coat along with a scarf and cap. Also, have your child dress in layers.

It is now the third quarter…only 18 weeks left in school and it is time to “buckle down” and prepare for the upcoming SOLs. Our expectations of the students will become greater because we become more focused in the curriculum and overall preparation for the Spring’s SOL. We will be sending home study guides in each content area that we need for you to review, DAILY, with your child.

We are all dedicated in ensuring academic success in all of our students. Please be on the lookout for anything graded. If it is sent home, it’s for you to see and keep. The same thing applies to the nightly homework agenda. Signing it Monday through Thursday will ensure that all homework is completed and correspondence is seen. Students should be reading every night for 25 minutes!

This month’s academic focus:

·         In writing we will work on the Domains of Writing in the areas of spelling and formatting. We will continue working on cursive writing and start the Writing Process. In reading we will focus on ‘During Readingstrategies and asking comprehension questions.

·         In math we will continue our studies in multiplication and introduce division. We are beginning multiplying 2-digit by 1-digit. PLEASE REVIEW FACTS NIGHTLY!

·         In social studies students will have concluded our unit of Ancient Greece (please continue to review) and will begin our unit of Ancient Rome.

·         In science we will conclude our study of conservation. We will be sending home a study guide for this unit’s test.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any concerns or questions. We are on our way to becoming the ultimate team of parents and teachers!
